O'Connell finished in fifth place earlier this evening, after taking in the fewest amount of votes to win from the viewing public.
He told host Brian Dowling that he was "devastated" to be evicted the night before the live final.
Asked how he managed to last so long in the series without being up for eviction, he said: "I don't know, lots of luck."
After noticing Alex crying in the house following his departure, he joked: "I should hope so!
"I couldn't have stayed there [if she left]. If anyone deserves to win, it's her because she's the most genuine.
"She's amazing. She's the only person who's never let her energy flag."
After dismissing rumours that the pair were more than just friends, he said of the other couples in the house: "Jay and Louise often detached themselves. Aaron and Faye were a nightmare, up and down more than the light switches."
He then tipped Alex to win, and for Aaron to be the next housemate to be evicted in tomorrow's live final.
