Dogs commanded to herd ducks
Published Tuesday, Jul 19 2005, 14:45 BST | By Daniel Saney
The housemates performed their second dog show this afternoon with the help of four ducks.
At around 13.45 Big Brother asked one trainer to come to the Diary Room. Craig obliged and returned bearing a laminate with instructions for a duck-herding task.
Reading the challenge rules aloud in the garden, the self-proclaimed pretty trainer explained: "Today's dog show will test the dogs' herding skills. Trainers must put their dogs into pairs. Each pair of dogs will have two minutes to herd all of the ducks from one pen to the other pen in the garden."
He went on to describe how the ducks must pass under the white bar in and through a pair of gates between the pens, and that only the dogs can coerce the ducks without touching or throwing things at them.
Group one must herd the ducks from one pen, under the bar and then into the second pen within two minutes. The second group must return them via the same route within the same time limit.
First up were Tinkerbell and Stiffler (Makosi and Anthony). Anthony opened the pen and tried to coax them out. Once out, they were greeted by a series of high-pitched "go there"s by Makosi. Looking on, frustrated trainer Derek observed "It's the easiest thing in the world to do."
Having traversed the obstacles, all four ducks eventually cooperated and found themselves in the second pen.
Before the second pair of dogs embarked on their challenge, the housemates made observations on the ducks' behaviour. Orlaith noted: "If you just keep your shadow on them, make them see that you're there, they'll do it." Meanwhile, Eugene had the epiphany that "they seem to walk away from you."
Armed with such foolproof advice, the second pair of dogs - Eugene and Science - steeled themselves for the second whistle. The pair quickly forced the ducks out of the pen before they snuck back in again. Once out again, the ducks refused to cooperate in walking under the bar before finally seeing sense and eventually ending up back where they started as the task required.
The housemates gathered on the patio steps, confident that they had passed the day's challenge.
