Joe McElderry's 'Popstar to Operastar' win dazzles 4m

The main Popstar to Operastar entertained 3.45m (13.9%) in the 8pm hour on ITV1 and 123k (0.5%) on +1, but lost out to Countryfile's 5.43m (23.4%) on BBC One.
However, the programme's results show climbed to 4.16m (19.6%) from 10pm and 119k (1%) on timeshift, as former X Factor winner Joe McElderry was crowned the champion.
Also on ITV1, series five of Law & Order: UK launched with a healthy 5.85m (24.2%) in the 9pm hour and 186k (1%) on +1, outperforming The World's Most Expensive Paintings's 2.62m (10.8%) on BBC One.
Fake Or Fortune? concluded with 3.66m (17.7%) on BBC One in the 7pm hour, losing out to The Royal's 4.13m (22.4%) on ITV1 and 140k (0.6%) on +1. Seve: The Legend, profiling the late golf star, captivated 2.14m (14.4%) on BBC One from 10.25pm.
On BBC Two, coverage of the athletics British Grand Prix was watched by 1.7m (9%) between 6pm and 8pm, while 100k (0.5%) tuned in on BBC HD. Series 17 of Top Gear climbed to 4.57m (18.4%) in the 8pm hour, up 390k week-on-week, with a further 892k (3.6%) watching in HD. Coast then fetched 2.19m (9.1%) from 9pm and 227k (0.9%) on BBC HD, before Mock The Week amused 1.4m (6.7%) from 10pm.
Channel 4's A Place in the Sun: Home or Away booked in 950k (4.6%) in the 7pm hour and 127k (0.5%) on +1. Screenings of Marley and Me and In Her Shoes grabbed 2.76m (11.3%) and 780k (7.3%) on Channel 4 from 8pm, along with 505k (2.4%) and 122k (2.3%) on timeshift.
Showings of The Legend of Zorro and Master And Commander appealed to 1.03m (4.7%) and 1.07m (5.6%) respectively from 8pm.
Overall, ITV1 won primetime with 18.8% (+1: 0.6%) against BBC One's 15.9%. BBC Two scooped third with 11.2%, followed by Channel 4 with 8.8% (+1: 1.4%) and Channel 5 with 4.8%.
Elsewhere, US cop show Hawaii Five-0 entertained 452k (1.9%) on Sky1 in the 9pm hour. A new episode of animated comedy Family Guy pulled in 1m (4.5%) on BBC Three from 10pm.
