Filming started last week on the British version of the singing talent show and James was one of the hopefuls who performed for the judges, reports The Sun.
James previously had a record deal, but was dropped after the follow-up to his number 16 single 'Foolish' failed to make the Top 40 in 2005. His album The Unlikely Lad was only released as a digital download.
Sources told the tabloid newspaper that the talent at the first week of taped auditions was "amazing" and of "a top standard".
Jessie J, will.i.am, The Script's Danny O'Donoghue and Tom Jones are the judges on the UK Voice, which launches in March on BBC One.
Simon Cowell revealed to Digital Spy last week that he considered The Voice "a challenge" for Britain's Got Talent in the Saturday night ratings battle.
