The Voice UK star Bo Bruce has insisted that she is not rich despite being a member of one of the wealthiest families in Britain.

Daughter to the Earl of Cardigan, her full title is Lady Catherine Brudenell-Bruce, but the talent show contestant claims she no longer speaks to her father.

She wrote on her website: "Although I was born into a privileged family, that spoon in my mouth was pretty rusty and not very silver. I don't live in Downton Abbey, this is the 21st century.

"I work in a pub and struggle to pay my electricity bills just like everyone else. I haven't seen my father in years - unfortunately that's not unusual in this day and age."

Addressing reports regarding her alcohol and drug addiction, Bruce added: "As for the drink and drugs - when I went into treatment as a teenager I was in a mess - turning to the wrong things to try and make myself feel better.

"I was never an addict, I feel so fortunate that I managed to get out of that hole, and I really hope other people can see that there is a way back from despair. Everything passes, nothing is permanent.

"My outlet is music and lyrics. If you want to see and hear the real me, listen to me singing -because that's where I bare my soul."

Bruce lists Massive Attack, Muse, Dido and David Guetta among her musical inspirations.

Appearing on Saturday's episode, the 27-year-old was picked up by The Script's Danny O'Donoghue and will appear in the live shows later this month.
