'The Voice' UK Live Blog: Team Jessie J, Danny perform for first time

By
The Voice - Live Blog
Since will.i.am and Sir Tom Jones each cast aside one of their contestants on last week's edition of The Voice UK (though we're still surprised will managed to keep up with all that texting he was doing), it's only fair that Team Jessie J and Team Danny O'Donoghue sing for survival too.

We're not entirely sure what's in store on tonight's live show, given the rumoured BBC revamp. For instance, will last week's backing dancers be allowed to roam free on stage once more, or get locked away for fear of angering Jessie?

Whatever happens on The Voice this week, Digital Spy will be here watching in our very own swivel chairs, praising the "dope" acts and mocking the rest. Join us here from 7.10pm!

20:40Voting lines are now open, folks. Aleks, Max and Hannah were favourites of mine tonight and if I was a betting man I'd say that Ruth-Ann, Becky (unfortunately) and David are in danger of heading home tomorrow. What do you guys think? And how did you like this week's Voice UK? Leave your comments below! Night night!

20:36Ooh, it's all getting a bit steamy in the V-Room. Cassius and Becky look quite cosy and Aleks thought his bass player was fit. I didn't even see... her? So, no comment. Reggie mentions that Sinitta has been tweeting about the show. Not sure that's anything to be proud of, Reg. She tweets everyone. Even me.

20:33Yeah... haunting. Not sure that last bit of showboating was necessary, but I'll allow it. Danny says that she has "made the whole UK proud". will.i.am suggests that Bo proves this is the best version of The Voice in the world and Tom Jones describes the pain behind the song as "fantastic". What a touching end to the episode. So much better than last week's shoddy show...

20:28Next is Bo Bruce. She's had an emotional week and is determined to bring her pain into tonight's performance of 'Running Up That Hill'. This could be incredible.

20:26Tom Jones seems worn out just talking about those stairs. No surprise, he invested in one of those fancy chairs about ten years ago. will.i.am, meanwhile, hits a new judging low - making exactly the same comment as a two-bit internet commentator.

20:24Oh, Basement Jaxx. Bit of a strange choice, but I approve. She carries it off well but I fear she may be overshadowed by the more powerful performers of the night. And when the length of a microphone cable is more impressive than the performance, she could be in danger.

20:21It's now time for Becky Hill, another personal favourite. I love her gruff little voice and teenage strops.

20:19Oh, well, the coaches are all on their feet, so apparently I'm wrong. will.i.am says more jibberish that puts me in mind of XF's Kelly Rowland ("IdidntknowyouweregoinguptempoOWWWW"), before he and Jessie J admit that they were concerned he was about to sing Rihanna's 'Umbrella'. Er, excuse me, that song is a classic. Agreed?

20:16Here's David Julien and he's singing 'Sweet Disposition'. He's never heard of it, which automatically loses my vote. Criminal. And unfortunately you can tell he's not that comfortable with singing it. I'm glad he's got his coat on, if you know what I mean.

20:14So next week, Team Tom and Team will.i.am will be performing with their coaches. Could be exciting. After all, the judges' duets were the best thing about last year's X Factor. I know the BBC will be screaming at that comparison, but it's a fair point.

20:11Danny's glad that Cassius "flipped it" - these coaches are obsessed with things being flipped, what's that about? I think will.i.am would have preferred Coolio's 'Gangsta's Paradise'... actually, that's not a bad idea. Tom, give it to Matt and Sueleen next week!

20:09Well, that was alright. I know Cassius has got a lot of fans but I think he ranks somewhere down the bottom of tonight's performances. Not that he's bad, though. It's just... you know, Coldplay...

20:07Welcome onto the stage, Cassius Henry. Jessie's chosen to have him sing 'Paradise' by Coldplay. I can practically hear those millions of viewers around the country groaning.

20:05Danny thinks that Aleks is better that Bublé at this stage, then shouts REALLY LOUDLY. will.i.am's input comes in the form of an extremely tragic 'knock knock' joke (he's getting more and more like Louis Walsh as the show goes on), but Tom wishes he would "flip it" a bit more. The audience boos, but Jessie reminds them that they "don't boo". Eep.

20:02I'm picturing Max Milner stomping on his hat backstage at Aleks stealing his Voice heartthrob status. Anyone else?

20:01An inspired song choice of 'Dream A Little Dream' and a snappy blue suit mean that Aleks has probably got enough of the female vote to make it through tomorrow. Can't pretend I'm not glad though. He's pretty darn good.

19:59Here's Aleks Josh of Team Danny. In case you didn't get that subtle musical cue, he's supposed to be The Voice's bad boy.

19:57Jessie J reveals that Vince came up with the entire production himself, and Tom Jones, who in case you've forgotten knew Elvis, praises him for putting his own stamp on the song. Danny calls the rendition "unhuman" (in a good way) and will.i.am thinks it was "wowzers". But what did you lot think?

19:54Next it's Jessie J's bezzie Vince Kidd. He's singing 'Always on My Mind' in a giant piece of blotting paper. And he absolutely loves the camera. Again, another solid performance. What do the coaches say...

19:50Glad to see The Voice UK hasn't buckled under pressure and scrapped the V-Room. I'm shocked the place is not full of confused holidaymakers.

19:48Oh look. Dancers! They must have snuck on somehow. That was a pretty exciting, stirring performance there from Hannah. And what an end note. Danny calls her "rock royalty", will.i.am says that the mash-up was "brave", but thinks that she wasn't confident in the "switch-up". Again Jessie J hates the dancers and we get the first X Factor style audience boo and coach bickering between Jessie and Danny. It's only a matter of time before they're the same show...

19:44She's singing a kind of quirky mash-up of both the Ella Fitzgerald and Justin Timberlake versions of 'Cry Me A River'. Goodness, I forgot what a tune this is. iTunes time!

19:42Next up for Team Danny, it's Hannah Berney. She's been performing for the Queen this week. I love how The Voice contestants are already able to do what the winner of BGT is dreaming of.

19:41will.i.am goes on a big thing about her occasionally being "wobbly" and changing the shape of her mouth. I think Ruth-Ann could be in danger tomorrow. Or get the sympathy vote. Either way.

19:39Well, I'm still not sure if she's good enough. There's a kind of shriek-ey quality to her voice that sounds too much like she's losing control. Jessie J praises her for having "grown", Tom says she's a bit pitchy but still "great" and Danny praises her for her effort - the Voice equivalent of a participation medal.

19:35She's singing Cheryl Cole's 'Promise This', which is at least going to get her in will.i.am's good books.

19:33Here's the closest thing The Voice UK has to Wagner, Ruth-Ann St. Luce. Is she actually any good? We're about to find out...

19:32Danny is "so proud" of Max, and rightly so. He claims for the second time tonight that he "doesn't run a dictatorship", which is making me start to think that he IS running a dictatorship. Jessie J says the song was like a film (?) and made her "heart feel really content". Wow, these are great comments. He's safe, I reckon.

19:28OH MY GOD, WHERE IS MAX'S HAT? Normally its absence would be enough to completely distract me from his performance, but that was a pretty impressive version there. My heart's melted a little. Is that fiancée of his still around?

19:26Here's Max Milner and his guitar. He's singing... sorry, collaborating on 'Free Fallin'. Oh yeah, love a bit of Tom Petty. Can somebody do 'American Girl' soon, please?

19:24Nice, confident foot-stomper of a performance from Toni there. The coaches love it. Tom is pleased that she was able to put her own spin on it and will.i.am thinks she's "zoom" BUT NOT BOOM. We're off to a good start.

19:18First up for Team Jessie is Toni Warne, a personal favourite of this writer. She's good enough in rehearsals to make Jessie J stomp around in ecstasy, so let's hope her performance of 'Proud Mary' is similarly impressive.

19:16Jessie J describes her acts as "the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful". Um... only half of those words are a compliment, Jess. And will.i.am is ready to "strategise". Apparently he's been watching The Apprentice.

19:14Here we go! Holly and Reggie are of course looking beautiful. And the coaches are sat snugly in their disappointingly stationary chairs, so I'm guessing that's the end of their opening songs.

19:10Rumour has it the coaches' opening performance has been scrapped after last week's not so beautiful rendition of 'Beautiful Day'. Let's see if that's true.

19:08Evening, everyone. It's nearly time for The Voice UK's sophomore live show! Admittedly last week's festivities weren't too well received, but we've got high hopes that at least a few of the kinks have been worked out for tonight. But then again, what's a TV talent show without controversy, eh?
