The Ultimate Big Brother winner said that he had sympathy for Chantelle inside the house, arguing that she is still in love with the ex-Ordinary Boys frontman.
However, Dowling said that he suspects the relationship is one-sided now with Preston not feeling the same way about his former wife.
"I can completely relate to what Chantelle's going through. I did that - broke up with someone and went off the rails," the reality TV star told The Sun.
"I think they should be together, but I think they need time. She was more keen on the reconciliation than him. He was aware of what the show was trying to do. He didn't look at her like she looked at him. When the two of them were together, it was like they were frozen."
He added: "They'd be lying next to each other but there was no emotion between them. If it was me, I'd be trying to hold hands. I felt for her. I'd be lying if I said I think they'll get back together."
Dowling triumphed on Channel 4's final ever series of Big Brother last Friday.
