Why we have loved Big Brother

I remember exactly where I was when I watched the first episode of Big Brother. I was sitting in my childhood home in York. I had only been in possession of my own TV for just over a month and I rarely left it alone for more than half an hour. I had been waiting for Big Brother to start since catching the preview show, which had advertised for contestants to take part in a "social experiment". It had been a massive success in Holland and there had been loads of sex and rude stuff going on, so there was an immediate appeal for a curious 16-year-old boy. I couldn't have guessed at that point how much of an impact this silly little reality show was going to have on the next 10 years of my life.

Nasty Nick is confronted by Darren in BB1
Initially, I believed that the only people watching Nick, Craig, Mel, Caggy, Sada and the rest were me and one of my closest friends. We talked about it endlessly, managing to form strong opinions on everything from Tom’s embarrassing erection, Mel’s flirtatiousness and Darren’s dull but slightly hypnotic behaviour with the chickens to Caggy’s laugh. The big talking point was obviously 'Nasty' Nick. At the time, we considered his note writing, fib-telling and general dastardly behaviour an absolute outrage. How dare this man break the rules of our favourite show? What happened next, we all know about, but from this point on I was hooked. No amount of sneering or despair from my parents could prevent me watching the show every year, through the good times (BB2, BB3, Celeb Hijack, BB10) and the bad (BB Panto, BB8, Celeb BB5).

Ultimate Big Brother - Nadia
Even on the show’s last day on air, I am still forced to question my passion for it. Series 5 winner Nadia has attempted to take her own life after receiving a negative response to to her return for the 'Ultimate' series. Strangely, nearly all contestants who have returned to the house after a spell in the outside world (Jade, Nikki, Jon Tickle, nearly the entire UBB cast) have come out worse second time around. Whether trying to ape their characteristics from the first time, having a false sense of what the public loved about them, or just realising that playing it boring and safe will get you a spot in the final, a second go was never as good as the first. In the case of Nadia, we can only hope that she's getting the help that she needs. In thinking that she would be immediately loved as much as she was the first time around, the crushing realisation that she actually wasn't very popular any more must have been painful, especially for such a volatile character.

But as we approach the grand finale, I'm not going to cast doubt on the psychological testing and duty of care that Channel 4 and Endemol have offered housemates down the years. It certainly shouldn't be cast aside, but that's for another day. Equally, I will spare you my sixth-form philosophising about the significance of Big Brother, its post, post-modern slant on the world, and some waffle about it being the only truly "real" reality show. However, as we reflect back on the programme this evening, I do think it's worthwhile taking stock of the staggering effect its creators have had on the TV landscape since the turn of the millennium. Its interactivity, its online feed, its huge phone votes, its sister shows and its constantly creative and evolving production team are rarely given the credit they deserve.

Of course, as with any programme that runs for over a decade, there will be lulls. Big Brother 8, which was my first year working at DS, was a bit of a stinker, with some truly horrid housemates and a load of botched tasks. But even during the leaner years when the press turned against the show they once loved, it has continued to evolve. Series 10, for my money, had one of the greatest and most intriguing bunch of housemates of all time, while the final celeb and summer runs this year have proved that even if Channel 4 isn't interested anymore, the task teams, editing teams and creatives are still very passionate about the show. Hence, the glorious Tree Of Temptation, the Ignore The Obvious and Glee Tasks, everything with Stephen Baldwin and the arrival of Sam Pepper.

Kinga masturbating with a wine bottle
Everyone has a favourite Big Brother moment. Craig confronting Nick. Brian's outrage at the arrival of Josh. Helen and Paul's romance. Kate's dodgy dancing. The Jade-isms. Jon Tickle's nerdishness. The Jungle Cats rumbling for a fight in BB5. Victor's Diary Room banter. Nadia's victory. Makosi and Anthony in the Jacuzzi. Kinga and that bottle. Craig's passion for Anthony. Sezer's eviction. Nikki's outbursts. Aisleyne taking on everyone. Brian Belo and Samanda's constant enthusiasm. Luke and "put them away, Rebecca". Rex wasting the shopping list money. Anything featuring Marcus The Irrepressible Dark Horse. The Alice In Wonderland task. George Galloway as the pussycat. Prestelle. Bonkers Barrymore. The Feltz breakdown. "Yeah, it's Jackie". Verne Troyer's drunken rampages. I couldn't possibly choose one. Thank you Big Brother, I loved every minute of it.... even Big Brother 4.

I loved BB from the start. It has at times infuriated me, lifted me,made me laugh and made me cry but it has always entertained me and kept me engrossed throughout each summer. I will miss it and hope that another channel picks it up next year. Loved BB11 especially, thanks for all the fun

Actually, Brendal, I think the quote was: "Yeah, Brackie" ... That's what made it so funny, the fact that Jackie Stallone ended up somehow crossing Brigitte's name with her own.

I am 75 and have sooooo enjoyed BB ... what am I going to do now it's finished. All have done a great job and the last 'house' had the best people. Thank you all.

The first BB I watched was BB4 and I only saw a bit of that. Since then i have watched almost every episode. BB11 was so much better than BB10, and it seemed to have a bigger production value!

I remember how exciting just the wait for the first BB to start was...! I was instantly hooked, it was nothing like anything you had ever seen before, to spend so much time watching "ordinary" people, you came to know almost as much about them as your friends LOL But the show itself was revolutionary, to lock people away for weeks, the tasks, the twists, the noms and evictions - sensational. Even during the awful BB8, the worst ever series, BB never lost that spell it cast. As a viewer and fan, the effect on my life that BB has had is Immense, the first "message board" i ever went on was a BB one - sorry not Ds! and i have met many great friends, some i have met in real life. The influence of BB on TV today remains, BBLB introduced the idea of a spin-off show copied by the "Xtra factor" the biggest show on tv now and others for one example. But ultimately it is the hms that are the stars and why we became hooked, year after year,so many great characters that invoked greater passions on the forums where people argue for and against people on a mere tv show, its like sports fans for there teams or players! for everything that makes BB special and why i still watch it and why i am deeply saddened and everything that BB means to me can be summed up in one small word -Nikki

I've loved every minute of Big Brother ( BB4 alot less!)and if I had to write a colum about it, it would be identical to the one above. I've been ridiculed by people for watching but this is usually by people that have never seen it...once you start watching, you are glued! Will miss it sooooo much :(

That was beautiful! Putting into words exactly what I think.

BB was ground breaking when it arrived in 2000. Real reality TV, interactive and entertaining.Sadly in recent years, people have learnt how the show works, entered with hidden agendas and have become too media savvy. Furthermore, I think the series morphed into a parody of its former self with stereotypical housemates.Loved BB1, BB2, BB3 (Jade..."am I mingin"), BB5, BB7 (Aisleyne's year), Celebrity Hijack and BB11...Bob Righter, Save & Replace and the Tree of Temptation were genius...but more importantly was the selection of the house mates. Love Josie!

Even if you like it or not. It is one of the most ground breaking shows in history

We were always looked upon as 'sad' if we watched Big Brother, 'how can you watch that car crash television?' and on a certain level I agreed. But if you shook that off and looked hard enough you found glimmers of reality. When the thought left their minds for a split second that they were on TV, they showed themselves and were left open to our judgement. Even though I had problems with many housemates I will always admire their bravery for doing it (even if they did think they'd get something for it there were no guarantees) and be envious of something that is a truly life changing experience - a chance to look at yourself in a living mirror. Hope it's not the end...

Big Brother has been the most amazing rollercoaster ride over the past 10yrs. Nothing else has managed to polarise opinions, draw screaming crowds and make world headline news. Filled with promise and potential, from the bizarre to the brilliant - it has had it all. I have watched contestants come and go, sat for hours watching people sleep, made friends in chatrooms and even stood in the Eviction audience. Beyond anything else it has never failed to entertain me. Big Brother, my summer time friend you will not be forgotten - you were awesome!!

BB has been my summer for 10 years now - I really don't know what I will find to engage with next year ... an hour or more every day for 13 weeks, plus live feed, website, forum and general chat about it ... its really amazing to think what an effect this show has had over the space of a decade. In my opinion - the right winner. Brian was the most surprised and rightful winner back on BB2 ... and winning UBB brings it full circle. Looking at the fresh life breathed into BB11 this year ... surely its a mistake to dump the show. There is life in the old dog yet. If I owned a broadcast TV channel ... this would be my number 1 priority to buy.

Big Brother really is a dead show killed off by the producers mucking around with the format,Davina doesn't help it either,if Channel 5 have bought it they should return the show to its original version and have a new presenter, getting rid of most of the producers would help as they have run out of ideas
