'X Factor's Tulisa Contostavlos, 'Casualty' win Mind Media Awards
Tulisa Contostavlos was among the winners at tonight's Mind Media Awards, which celebrates the best portrayals and reporting of mental health within media.
The Thick of It's Rebecca Front hosted the event at the British Film Institute, with guests including Ruby Wax, who recently starred in stand-up show Losing It, which dealt with her personal battle with depression.
The X Factor judge Contostavlos won the documentary award for her BBC Three show My Mum and Me, a programme that showed the N-Dubz singer looking after her mother, who has schizo-affective disorder.
Casualty won the drama award for its storyline involving Dr Ruth Winters (Georgia Taylor), who was sectioned after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Contostavlos said: "Mental health issues are something that's very close to my heart. Winning a Mind Media Award means so much to me, I'm blown away.
"It's something that affects so many people and their families. I wanted My Mum and Me to show that no-one should be ashamed to speak out about mental health issues."
Host Rebecca Front added: "It was a huge honour to host this year's Mind Media Awards. I feel proud to have been part of an event which commends people in the media for their positive contributions to mental health.
"The media is hugely influential in shaping people's opinions of mental health, for both good and ill, so it's brilliant to be able to highlight how well it can be done."
