MacLaine explained that fans can expect "a little sparring" between the pair on screen.

"We do a little sparring but it's more sophisticated and adult," she told the Daily Mail.

"My character is really trying to explain to her that you really must grow up and out of this addiction to tradition because this is what got you into the World War.

"Martha is not just a crass, cranky American coming in there to call a spade a spade. She's very smart and sensitive to what's going on with her daughter's children. Violet is a human being with complications and a past of some pain that Martha understands."

She added: "She's extremely outspoken. They expected me to be bawdy and that's naturally how I am. How I behaved wasn't a put-on."

Hugh Bonneville praised the actress, saying: "I was in awe of Shirley, both for her range and what you might call her back catalogue.

"It was a real joy to see her and Maggie sparking off each other, both on camera and behind it."

Downton Abbey's third series will air in the autumn on ITV1 in the UK. It will premiere in the US on PBS on January 6, 2013.
