He said that he cannot do both shows at the same time and that the new project will not begin until Downton Abbey has ended.

Speaking about The Gilded Age, Fellowes told The Wall Street Journal: "It's for NBC Universal and it will happen when Downton finishes because I just couldn't do both at once.

"I haven't written it yet, but it's about the old aristocracy, the Winthrops and the Stuyvesants and the new money of oil and gas and shipping in the 1870s. It will all be fiction - it won't be real people - but when those families descended on New York, they took over."

Downton Abbey has been commissioned for a fifth series by ITV but Fellowes admitted that he is unsure of the future beyond that.

He said: "I don't know yet if there is a season six, but it's not going to go on forever."

Lily James recently told Digital Spy that she would love to return to the show for the fifth series as Lady Rose MacClare.

She said: "I'm really enjoying developing her. In the first year, she was in a bit of a whirlwind, a bit intense, so it's been really fun playing her this [fourth] series to find lights and shades and see the more sensitive side to her."
