'New Girl' and eight other classic 'Will They/Won't They' TV couples

By
New Girl returns to UK screens at 9pm on E4 tonight. Huzzah!

Reason No.1 to be excited is the return of Schmidt - who hasn't missed the chut-a-ney loving King of the Douche? Reason No.2 is that one of TV's classic 'Will They/Won't They' romances will be resumed as Jess and Nick get back to doing what they do best, teasing us and toying with us as we wait and hope and scream at the TV for them to 'get on with it already'.

'New Girl' stars Jake Johnson and Zooey Deschanel

To celebrate Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson's classic romantic TV double act, Digital Spy has pulled together eight other classic 'Will They/Won't They' couples.

Ross and Rachel in 'Friends'
"Did she get off the plane?" The definitive and in our opinion ultimate 'Will They/Won't They' duo who captured the world's imagination with their on-off and finally *SPOILERS* on again romance.

Sam and Diane in 'Cheers'
Before Ross and Rachel and before Friends there was Sam and Diane and there was Cheers. Some would say they did it even better in the '80s. What do you think?

Tim and Dawn in 'The Office'
The ultimate office romance, which turned a really good Ricky Gervais sitcom into a classic one that appeared to have the entire nation emotionally involved. The kiss in the final Christmas episode was a true punch-the-air TV moment.

Jim and Pam in 'The Office' US
Anything us Brits can do, the Americans do with more episodes, more twists and a stonking great big wedding episode on top. John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer were perfect as the awkward, but loveable leads.

Dawson and Joey in 'Dawson's Creek'
The ultimate teen TV romance that, sadly, was never meant to be. To be honest, looking back we're not sure how either of them put up with the other. They were so darn irritating.

Joey and Pacey also in 'Dawson's Creek'
Where Dawson and Joey failed, Pacey and Joey prospered. It should have been a jump-the-shark moment to have Joshua Jackson's wise-cracking Pacey snogging the face off Dawson's best buddy and love interest Joey. Thankfully it wasn't.

Mulder and Scully in 'The X Files'
FBI Special Agents Mulder and Scully made dealing with aliens and paranormal phenomena sexy in the '90s. So sexy in fact that some people weren't even watching for the sci-fi bits, preferring to focus on the simmering romantic dynamic between the two leads.

Castle and Beckett in 'Castle'
How do you make a standard US TV procedural something a little bit more, well, special. You throw in a must-watch 'Will They/Won't They' romance of course. Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) have had millions hooked for five seasons now.
