BBC One had a clear lead in the ratings last night fuelled by a particularly dramatic, hour-long episode of EastEnders.
The episode, which saw Dr "Mad" May Wright (Amanda Drew) knock out Mickey Miller (Joe Swash) and explode the Millers' house, was watched by 8.1m (35.1%) from 8pm. BBC One's audience dropped to 5.3m (23%) for Holby City from 9pm to 10pm, though the channel maintained its overall lead.
ITV1 attracted 6m (31.5%) for Emmerdale at 7pm but took a dip when Euro 2008 football got underway. Coverage of Sweden taking on Russia, between 7.30pm and 10pm, interested only 4.2m (18.9m).
BBC Two introduced new factual series Tribal Wives, in which women are sent to live in various tribe societies, at 9pm. The hour-long show had an audience of 2.3m (10%), the same as Springwatch Spectacular in the preceding hour, and was just 100,000 (0.3%) behind Channel 4's River Cottage Spring.
Five could not reach the 1m mark once its soaps had finished at 6.30pm, with Megastructures on 817,000 from 8pm and The Hotel Inspector Revisits drawing 959,000 (4.3%) from 9pm.
Euro 2008 football again gave a boost to multichannel audiences, with 686,000 (3.5%) tuning to ITV4 between 7.30pm and 10pm for Greece versus Spain.
BBC Four attracted a strong audience of 463,000 (2.3%) with new documentary Jews, looking at London's orthodox community, between 9pm and 10pm.
