Richards, who quit the BBC soap last year after playing the character Pauline Fowler for 22 years, will start filming this month for the show which is due to hit screens at the start of 2008.
The ex-soap star will reportedly play a "loud-mouthed, rude" wheelchair-bound character.
An insider told The Sun: "She is really looking forward to being a part of this series - she was a huge fan of the first."
It won't be the first time Richards has worked within the field of comedy, as she initially found fame in the BBC department store sit-com Are You Being Served?.
