Prior to the result, Mel C revealed that she struggled to choose between the competitors, saying: "It's getting really tough now."
Jason Donovan agreed, adding: "This is the defining moment in the competition."
After announcing that Rory and Niall had attracted the fewest votes, the duo sang classic power ballad 'Alone' by Heart.
Following the performance, Lloyd Webber said: "I'm not going to do some corny reality show moment... Obviously I'm going to save Rory."
However, he told Niall: "I know there are roles for you in the West End. You would be a wonderful Raoul in Phantom of the Opera."
"I feel alright. I'm glad Rory's through," Niall said after the announcement. "Just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted."
Referring to Webber's support, the Irishman joked: "I hope he's casting!"
The contestant continues tomorrow evening, with seven contestants still battling for the role of Jesus.
