What was your reaction when Marc Cherry told you it wasn't Katherine marrying Mike?
"He called me a week before we started shooting and said, ‘Oh, I realise I should tell you because I told Teri already. You're not marrying Mike.’ And I was in shock. I really thought it was me! Then he said, ‘And you're going to have a nervous breakdown.’ And I said, ‘Thank you. Much better!’"
So do you think it's some kind of mental breakdown?
"I think it's probably just temporary insanity. I think we've all been through that when we get dumped by somebody. You kind of lose your centre and start behaving badly and have no control over it. I know I've been there. We're still not sure how far we're taking it - it's still kind of playing out. It's been great for me because I like how vindictive she is. We just shot a scene yesterday with me and Teri and again, you think, ‘Oh, she's realising that she's behaving badly’ but then, no, she doesn't get it. We're kind of still playing with that edge."
Do you think that's going to be the issue for your character in this season?
"Yeah. I think what's fun about Katherine anyway is you never know what she's going to do next. There's a certain element of surprise there and I think we're having fun with that. I just don't know how long it's going to play out. I'm not sure that the writers know how long."
Do you know if she's a possible suspect for Julie's strangling?
"Yes, she is!"
How do you feel about that?
"Well, I'm glad Julie's not dead, because that would be terrible. I went to a screening at Marc's house for the first episode and he had one of those wonderfully cryptic statements where he said, ‘You know what's really great is the person who actually committed the crime is in the room right now and they don't even know it.’ And so I'm looking around the room going, ‘Who's here?’ And I'm not going to tell you, but there was only like maybe six actors there. So it's one of us."
What kind of reaction do you get from fans? Do they empathise with you?
"I think it's mixed. Some people don't like Katherine at all, and that's fine with me because I think you need to have somebody who's the provocateur. You know there's always going to be people who are in Susan's camp and then there's going to be people in Katherine's camp. And I think that's what's great about the show - there's something for everybody."
How is Katherine's relationship with Bree this season?
"I still love the relationship with Bree because Bree knows her better than anybody and can identify with Katherine. But Bree just sort of gets sick of her. So let's just say that Bree's telling Katherine, 'Enough is enough, get your shit together' which I like because Bree has been through it herself."
When you first joined the series you spoke about coming in as an outsider; is it a different experience these days?
"Yeah, it is. I feel like it's just great. I truly am thankful every day that I have this job. I didn't expect it to last this long. It's just been a revelation for me how big the show is, especially talking to people from around the world. It still blows my mind how many people watch the show."
Desperate Housewives continues Wednesdays at 10pm on Channel 4.
