'Luther' finale ratings: Alice Morgan return gets 4.8 million for BBC

Luther brought in an extra 400k viewers for its series finale on Tuesday night (July 24), overnight data reveals.

The Idris Elba detective series, which featured the return of Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan, thrilled 4.83 million (8.2%) at 9pm, a significant climb week-on-week from the penultimate episode.

On BBC Two, The Routemasters: Running London's Roads intrigued 1.84 million (8.2%) at 9pm, before Chris O'Dowd comedy Family Tree tickled 627k (3.2%) at 10pm.

ITV's evening entertainment centered on Love Your Garden at 8pm, which pulled in 2.86 million (13.2%), and Hunting the Doorstep Conmen, which hauled in 2.29 million (10.3%) at 9pm.

Channel 4 struggled again in the 9pm ratings battle, only collecting 951k (4.2%) for documentary Why Don't You Speak English?. The broadcaster was beaten by Channel 5, which captured 1.54 million (6.9%) for the latest episode of US import CSI.

The Big Brother ratings stayed steady at 10pm on Channel 5, entertaining 1.31 million (7.49%).

BBC Three's mental health documentary Rachel Bruno: My Dad and Me pulled in 696k (3.1%) at 9pm, while the latest New Girl on E4 amused 577k (2.6%) in the same timeslot.

MTV's Geordie Shore remains a hit for the broadcaster, bringing in 351k (2.01%) for the latest episode.
