The Jump begins: Who will face the dreaded ski jump? - live blog

By
When we first heard about Channel 4's new winter sports show The Jump, we were intrigued. And then they announced the cast, and we could not wait. There is nothing about Sinitta in a snowsuit that doesn't appeal to us, so we've been counting down the hours until today, when the 12 celebrities will compete and face a live ski jump for the first time.

Ritchie Neville, Anthea Turner, Marcus Brigstocke, Amy Childs, Sinitta, Nicky Clarke, Henry Conway, Kimberly Wyatt, Melinda Messenger, Darren Gough, Laura Hamilton and Sir Steve Redgrave will compete in The Jump

© Channel 4

The show's already lost two - Sam Jones went out after injuring himself in an over-exuberant celebration, and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson decided the whole shebang wasn't for her. Now we're actually going to lose a celebrity in competition - let's just hope no-one breaks any bones in the process. So join Digital Spy from 8pm when the show kicks off on Channel 4...

21:00So, what did you think of The Jump? Will you be tuning in to watch the women take on the slalom? Let us know below...

21:00The results are in... Nicky jumped 9.5m! Ritchie is staying in! I'm quite pleased for Ritchie to be honest. Nicky says it's been a "great experience" and he's had "great fun". He looks quite irritated to be honest. On the other hand, Ritchie is punching the air...

20:59I have to say, I think Nicky's jump looked a little more impressive than Ritchie's - which is kind of a shame, because I'd quite like Ritchie to stick around. Mind you, the commentators are unsure Nicky's done enough...

20:58It's Nicky's time now... He's basically breathing in zen-style before the jump.

20:57Ritchie "said a few expletetives". "Expletetives". Anyway, he jumped 11.0 metres - his best jump so far. Ritchie is very pleased with himself.

20:57Ritchie jumped and stayed on his feet! He could not look happier about it. There was basically no jump - it was more just 'staying in the air'.

20:56Ritchie is up first. It's time for some live jumping, people! I love that he has a sparkly 5 on his ski suit. (And yes, unlike all you lot on Twitter, I'm focusing on the chest area and not any other... area.)

20:55The female celebrities are doing skeleton tomorrow night. I kind of wish that's what we'd opened with, rather than giant slalom. We're being promised Sinitta's crumpled cry face and people saying "ow" a lot. Yes please.

20:54I GENUINELY JUST WINCED AND GASPED. That fall for Darren looked horrible. He basically did the splits. Are Ritchie or Nicky going to do that live? Now?

20:51Aww, this is nice, innit.

20:48Sir Steve's already downed his shot. Good on him. We're about to see the live ski jump - who do you want to stay in the competition? Let us know!

20:47Ritchie has apparently only been signed off for the small jump because he's "dangerous". Amazing. They're genuinely worried he's going to break something aren't they? Nicky's going off the small jump too. Boo - I hope someone will go off the big'un at some point.

20:46Steve is top of the leaderboard - so he gets a shot of some unidentified booze. That's our kind of prize. Marcus is second, Darren in third... and Henry is in fourth place! Yep, Nicky's got a time of 53.21 so he'll be in the jump-off with Ritchie. (We're making jump-off a thing. Sorry.)

20:45Given his clear unhappiness about his slalom, Nicky's doing surprisingly well. I mean he's not the fastest but it's not like he's awful. "It's just a game, why does it get so emotional?" he says at the bottom. It looked like he might have had a little cry.

20:44There you go - Nicky says he didn't do his "best" in the slalom. He thinks he might be in danger tonight... Let's find out!

20:43There is an awful lot of celebrity hip-shaking in this show. It should come with a warning.

20:42Given that Nicky was a little bit tense earlier, we have a feeling he might be in the bottom two. Unless we're completely reading into things that aren't there, of course...

20:41Sir Steve skied into the cameraman at the end of his slalom. No-one thinks about the poor cameramen. Anyway, he's up in top with a time of 39.30! Which means... Ritchie is definitely going to be ski jumping tonight! Ritchie from 5ive is going to be speeding off a ski jump. Live. We can't wait.

20:40Sir Steve is off! He's very tight - even clipping one of the flags - but he's shooting down there like nobody's business. Sir Steve might be our early tip to win, you know.

20:38We could watch Steve's hip-shaking repeatedly, it has to be said.

20:37Sir Steve Redgrave. Everyone we met said he was the most competitive (the words "eye of the tiger" were used.) We're expecting big things.

20:36"No pressure at all mate," Ritchie says about the possibility of doing the jump. Then has to tell Alex he's being sarcastic. Bit awkward. Henry calls the jump "vile". The more uses of the word "vile" we have in our lives, the better.

20:32So, who are you loving so far? Let us know below!

20:31"I think I released the beast," Henry says. That's quite enough of that filth thank you. Anyway, he's third with 47.77 - just three hundrenths of a second slower than Darren. It's getting tight... Henry might have to jump tonight!

20:30Henry kicks off his slalom with a growl, so that's a good sign, right? He's going so quickly - and theres a nice little "uggh" sound whenever he turns, like he's a tennis player all of a sudden. "Come on my lovelies," he says. I am sure Henry has never said that before in his life.

20:28Henry Conway "finding his inner anger". "I've really been giving it some gusto," he insists. Now he's growling at Davina. I don't even know what to do with this.

20:27HENRY CONWAY. He is the most glamorous skier EVER. When we met him, he told us that he has "dress up days" when he goes skiing - vintage, tweed - and that he basically just goes from restaurant to restaurant. Our kind of skier.

20:26Who would have thought they'd be watching Davina and Marcus Brigstocke sharing banter about thrust distance? Anyway, his time is 44.75 - he's jumped to the top of the leaderboard! Which means he's safe... no jumping for him tonight!

20:25Could have done without the celebratory thrust, mind.

20:25Is watching this show making anyone else feel really, really cold? Wondering whether to slip on a parka. Anyway, Marcus is off on his giant slalom and he's looking pretty, pretty good. I love that he's telling himself: "Come on" as he skis...

20:23"I'm doing something terrifying to avoid doing something terrifying so I can do something terrifying again." Nice.

20:22Whoever wrote Davina's script deserves a pay rise. Making a Marcus Brigstocke stand up comedian / fall down comedian joke is exceptional stuff, isnt it.

20:20Nice wordplay going on over with Matt Edmondson...

20:18So while we're in the ad break, what are you thinking of The Jump so far?

20:17"COME ON!" Ritchie says when it's over. Good for him. "I was just happy to get to the bottom of the course in one piece," he admits. He gets a time of 54.79. That's below Darren... is he going to have to jump tonight?

20:16We're seeing Ritchie's slalom now. He does seem to be going a bit slower than Darren, but I am blown away by how well he's doing. Given that he couldn't ski at all a few weeks ago, I think we should all be pretty wowed by Ritchie.

20:14To be fair to Ritchie, he is working so hard - and he's made so much progress from Hemel to Austria. I'm pretty impressed with him. So is Graham Bell - he says his improvement is "incredible"!

20:13Bless Ritchie. He... can't ski. At all.

20:13Ritchie Neville time! Ritchie was a stand-in - he joined the competition after Flash Gordon star Sam Jones left with an injury (which he picked up in an over-exuberant celebration. Seriously. I'm not even joking.)

20:12Actually his control is pretty bloody impressive. Even I can tell that. For some reason Darren says it was "horrible", but he ends up with a time of 47.74. He's at the top of the leaderboard... but also at the bottom. Do you think Darren is safe?

20:11We're about to see Darren's slalom (and he doesn't even know his time yet.) But I have to admit I know nothing about winter sports, so my commentary will be somewhat 'lacking' to be honest. He's on the move and he's staying upright which must be a plus...

20:09Actually, you know what, Darren looks like he's doing really well in this slalom training. Maybe he could be safe tonight? What do you think?

20:09I think we are going to see a lot of footage of 'celebrities falling over'. This pleases me.

20:08Darren not even being able to get through the door at the training centre in Hemel makes me instantly warm to him.

20:08Did they choose the celebrities and coaches based on pun potential? Davina just whacked out a "has he got the balls" for cricketer Darren Gough.

20:07We've seen an introduction to giant slalom now - which of the guys do you think will be best at this? And who'll be the worst?

20:06Right, the girls' competition starts tomorrow. That means it's all about the men and the giant slalom tonight!

20:05You know that bit where they're edging on to the bench? Yeah, I chickened out of that. There is nothing to hold on to. They are officially braver than me. Could you do it?

20:04Nicky seems tense, doesn't he? Didn't seem to like Davina talking about his hair much...

20:03EDDIE THE EAGLE. Now that is what I call primetime entertainment. The man is a hero. And he allows Davina to use the "eagle has landed" pun which is nice, isn't it.

20:03Oooof. Anyone feeling a bit dizzy looking down the biggest jump? Wish I hadn't eaten my pizza so quickly.

20:02When I went to the top of the jump, they didn't harness us up. Alex should count himself lucky, if you ask us.

20:01They're fighting it out for a bell. Seriously. A bell. They'd better be getting some pretty hefty pay cheques, eh?

20:01Marcus's stripy hat is fantastic, isn't it? Purple and yellow. Very bold.

20:00Who are you excited about seeing, then? We're obviously fans of Sinitta. We also think Henry Conway could be very entertaining indeed. When we met him, he and Amy Childs just kept talking about being the "glam squad".

19:59Already coveting Davina's beanie, obviously. Also loving the flashing lights on the jump. Very fancy.

19:58Here we go! Are you ready for this? I'm not sure I'm quite prepared to live blog a celebrity breaking their leg. Bear with me.

19:57You guys, we're just an advert break away now! To give you an idea of just how terrifying the ski jump is, check out my photo from my little visit to Innsbruck just before Christmas. You see where it looks like the shade hits the light at the bottom of the jump? Yeah. That's not the bottom. That's a big fat slope. I couldn't get down fast enough.
