So now seems like a good time to pay tribute to the good ship Red Dwarf and its crew - this week's Friday Fiver lists our picks for the sci-fi sitcom's best ever outings, so take a look at our list and then let us know which episodes from the show's long run number among your own favourites...
'Camille' - Series IV, Episode 1 - First aired February 14, 1991
There are plenty of larks to be hard in this early Dwarf ep as each of the crew becomes smitten with Camille - apparently everyone's ideal woman, but actually a slimy, tentacled blob able to assume the visage of your greatest desire. But the reason that 'Camille' earns a spot on this list is because of its focus on Kryten and Lister's friendship - when the latter's lessons in lying, cheating and all-round rebellion result in him being affectionately labelled "a total smeg-head" by his pal, it's a wonderful moment.
'Back to Reality' - Series V, Episode 6 - First aired March 26, 1992
This mind-bending gem sees the Red Dwarf gang attacked by a creature known as the Despair Squid. Experiencing a group hallucination, the foursome come to believe that their space-faring life was all just a game and that the reality is rather more grim: eternal rebel Lister is a cruel fascist, try-hard Rimmer is a dismal hobo and the Cat... he's dorky Duane Dibbley. Hilarious ("Bullet - Cybernautics." "That's traffic control!") but also thought-provoking, 'Back to Reality' is arguably the show's finest hour.
'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' - Series VI, Episode 3 - First aired October 21, 1993
When Kryten is infected by a computer virus, the Dwarfers have to enter an artificial reality Wild West video game. The end result - comedy gold, as Lister becomes Brett Riverbolt, knife man, Rimmer is transformed into bare-fist brawler 'Dangerous' Dan McGrew and Cat takes on the role of the Riviera Kid, a marksman so expert he can shoot damn bullets out of the air. Big laughs and a neat sci-fi notion combine to make this one of Red Dwarf's best ever episodes.
'Emohawk: Polymorph II' - Series VI, Episode 4 - First aired October 28, 1993
Following their Wild West adventure, our boys were reunited with an old 'friend' in this sequel to series three's also-excellent 'Polymorph' - we were torn between that episode and this follow-up for inclusion here, but while there's fun to be had watching a fearless Lister gracelessly wield a baseball bat, 'Emohawk' edges it for bringing fan favourites Duane Dibbley and Ace Rimmer back into the fold.
'Out of Time' - Series VI, Episode 6 - First aired November 11, 1993
Like the best Dwarf instalments, 'Out of Time' brings the funny but also gives you something to chew over - in the sixth series finale, the crew encounter their future selves and are disgusted with the bald, overweight snobs they've become. In a genuinely exciting final sequence, Lister, Cat and Kryten are all killed in an explosive confrontation with their counterparts and it's up to Rimmer of all people to save the day - but can he destroy the ship's time drive in... well, time? We had to wait a painfully long three years to find out...
Honourable Mentions... It was so hard narrowing our favourite Dwarf episodes to a list of just five, so silver medals go to Rimmer's amazing meltdown in 'Quarantine' and the gender-swapping antics of 'Parallel Universe' - fine episodes both.
