Season 2, Episode Seven

Featuring a bogstandard 'whodunnit' storyline, this episode works well by subverting the usually buoyant Gene Hunt and showing the consequences of his many flaws. It picks up on the darker side of the character that came to the fore in the previous story, with Gene's all-consuming anger towards druggies stemming from his late brother's plight. Here, his tendency to become absolutely intoxicated lands him in deep trouble as part of a gripping premise that he was simply too pissed to remember what he did on one fateful night.
There's a noticeable lack of Gene's genial one-liners, but it means his desperation and inner sadness is highlighted instead of his exterior mask. He comes across as a wild, hunted animal scavenging for survival.
The introduction of Acting DCI Morgan from the mysterious Hyde police force throws up quite a few possible interpretations, plus a definite feeling that we're moving closer to a resoultion to Sam Tyler's story. Intriguing stuff for sure, but also tinged with sadness as the end draws near.
Frustratingly, Morgan also served to interrupt Sam and Annie from finally snogging each other's faces off. Let's hope they get the chance next week. Don't worry Sam, you're beloved Maya will surely forgive you for a bit of coma copulation! Anyway, it's time to stock up on those hankies as we have just one episode left!
