Created by Tony Jordan – writer and producer of BBC One police drama HolbyBlue – Echo Beach is set in the fictional coastal town of Polnarren in Cornwall and will follow the lives of ex-lovers Daniel Marrack (Jason Donovan) and Susan Penwarden (Martine McCutcheon), whose complicated affairs are played out amongst teenage angst, family loyalties and tested friendships.
Meanwhile, Moving Wallpaper is a behind-the-scenes comedy which follows Echo Beach's fictional producer Jonathan Pope (Ben Miller) and the team at Echo Beach Productions, where the army of executives, crew and publicists behind the soap will be taken to the brink of insanity by their irrepressible producer.
A host of cross-overs between the shows have been planned, the first being former Footballers' Wives actress Susie Amy, who will initially be seen in Moving Wallpaper begging the producer for the part of Angela in Echo Beach.
Tony Jordan will produce both programmes alongside Kudos' Jane Featherstone and Alison Jackson.
Originally, when the series were given the green light, Echo Beach had been penciled in to the ITV2 schedule to air straight after Moving Wallpaper, which was due to been shown on ITV1.
However, a spokeswoman told DS today: "Although we had originally planned for Echo Beach to be on ITV2, as we further developed this unique project, it became clear to us that the two programmes link together so perfectly that they need to play out together on the same channel."
Both series have been commissioned for 12 episodes and are due to begin filming next month, with a provisional 2008 transmission.
