Sarah Jane: 'Secrets Of The Stars' Part One
Somewhat ironically for a story about astrology, fallen star Russ Abbot takes centre stage in this adequate instalment of Sarah Jane.

Many years on from his comedian heyday, Abbot still has a commanding presence and his turn as the possessed fraud Martin Trueman allows him free reign to let rip with his bulging eyes and droopy jaw movements that eerily echo Gordon Brown. It would be easy to accuse him of overacting, but the mannerisms are perfectly plausible given that the Ancient Light alien is still getting used to its new host body. Morever, his subtle touch was neatly demonstrated in the pre-credits teaser when we saw Trueman's true self - a self-loathing, but decent man.

However, there's simply too much technobabbly plot exposition during the latter half of the episode in an attempt to explain events. All this guff about new physics, ancient astrology and different universes serves to potentially alienate the audience as it's dwelt upon for far too long.

An excellent cliffhanger manages to bring the story back on track though. Very stylistically reminiscent of the endings for the Steven Moffat Doctor Who episodes 'The Empty Child' and 'Silence In The Library', the repetition of Mr Smith's "nothing is happening" line provides an eerie edge akin to "are you my mummy?" and "hey, who turned out the lights?"

The intercutting with Trueman's sinister broadcast, plus Clyde's new murderous inclination, raises the stakes and ensures the excitement is dramatically whipped up for the concluding part.
