Is 'Primeval' back with a bang?
Published Sunday, Mar 29 2009, 06:00 BST | By Ben Rawson-Jones | 46 comments

A lacklustre pre-credits sequence kicks off proceedings with a whimper, as a prehistoric monster pokes its head through an anomaly in a deserted museum, then promptly scoots off again. Perhaps it took a look at the script? It's a real wasted opportunity, as the opening couple of minutes need to instil a sense of jeopardy and excitement instead of a general response of 'meh'.
Thus ensues the usual, predictable runaround as Nick Cutter and his team pursue the Mega Croc around London before coaxing it back home. It quickly becomes frustrating that the monster will always spend ages roaring at one of the key protagonists, allowing them to concoct some kind of escape plan, yet will move straight in for the kill on any random extra. Still, extra brownie points for the quick dispatch of a traffic warden, plus Cutter's inventive use of a fire hose to lure the Croc off a balcony.

Attempts to elevate Nick Cutter's character from a dour block of wood fall flat, with his emoting over the deceased Stephen proving rather nauseous. Such attempts to give a layer of emotional depth are painfully shoehorned into the action, especially when Abby quips "Stephen would have known what to do." Cue Cutter grinding to a halt, putting his hand over his face before Abby issues a quiet apology. It's all too painfully obvious.
As ever, Ben Miller tackles the role of Lester with relish and soaks up the bulk of the (rare) good lines. Let's hope he hits the front line again very soon, as his dino-blasting at the end of the last season was pure escapist pleasure.

The visual feel of the episode, including various bits of London iconography and the CGI beastie, is generally of an impressive standard too. Furthermore, the aesthetic qualities of the lead characters are also well developed and make them look distinguished and individual, as Abby's new streamlined look complements Connor's attempts at bohemian chic and Cutter's bedraggled state.
Sadly, the episode ends as it begins - in a very shoddy manner. In a blatant bid to kick off a story arc that will simmer until the inevitable season finale face-off, Cutter's ex Helen returns to the scene and we're treated to a flashback of her nabbing the artefact. Who cares? We have no idea what her motivations or plans are, or who is at risk, so it's an ineffective end to a patchy beginning to the third season. Will Primeval ever hit its stride?

well to be honest, i think that series 3 is probably the best so far.And i know that there have only been two episodes so far but i think there are loads of funny lines in it already, so what is all this **** about there rarley being good lines?.i cant wait for this saturday. personally, i think dr who is rubbish, and robin hood seems ok but i just cant get into it, but my entire family loves primeval so ON WITH THE REST OF THE SERIES!

Primeval is GREAT !!! This fine show rocks ! - Great stories & Sexy Ladies too ! it makes BBC's Pathetic new version of Dr.Who look like the Utter Claptrap it really is ! Notice how a couple of writers like Paul Cornell & last nights episodes writer have quickly "jumped ship" from the awful drivel that RTD produces....to write for Primeval !

The reviewer has some pretty DAFT...or maybe "Frightened" (?) opinions ! Primeval is the easily BEST Sci fi/fantasy thing ITV has made for years - and it knocks spots off "Modern" BBC's infantile Mediocre output - including the appallingly over hyped dreadful rehash of the once great Dr.Who and the inept PC sanitised version of Robin Hood ! Primeval has constantly delivered very enjoyable episodes, plus some Great suspense scenes, and LIKEABLE (Remember that concept ?) Regular characters....! The Special effects have been very good, The CGI has been used intelligently and the series continues to develop.... unlike some shows I might mention that endlessly REHASH the same old themes ...with the SAME old faces returning every five minutes like untreated acne ! the Knee-jerk criticisms of Primeval by some, seemingly "Scared of it" reviewers is most interesting....indeed the programme seems to make some feel "Threatened" by it's very existance...along with it's MUCH more Stable core audience.... And Primeval achieved all that WITHOUT cynically using "Captive" Xmas day audiences...or by trading on any Established Past History set up by FAR MORE CREATIVE writers & Producers from an earlier time period in Television history.... Rather ironic that....

Some nice ideas, unfortunately tacked on to a dull central monster of the week story. They can and have done better than this, and in comparison this just seemed lazy. Sarah was a surprisingly good edition but other than that the episode just seemed to plod on in a predictable manner. A bit disappointing.

think the writer has gone out of his way to find reasons to be miserable, in all honesty he's totally missed the point.

Primeval is a marvellous romp, as is Doctor Who, and is just right for it's timeslot on a Saturday. Personally, I can't see what's wrong with the CGI. It's not as if the production team have endless time and money to throw at the effects, so what we've got is quite sufficient, IMHO. I managed five minutes of the first ever episode of Robin Hood, and gave up. Be interesting to see if it holds last week's ratings levels. Hurry back Merlin!!!

The reviewer is out of his tree! This is the best series that ITV have ever produced - and the characters are more true to life than other shows, especially on the BBC. I'd rather have 'real characters' than the bland factory produced characters from the BBC and some other ITV shows..... Long may the beasties roar!

I am not sure if it was just me but Cutter's new long hair and strange new accent put me off. He seemed to sound American one moment and then a wee bit Scottish the next. Whats with that??

seriously? i thought it was a good episode, it seems to open up the idea that they may be able to control anomythingies soon and have a more mythological feel to it.. I'd rather watch primeval than Doctor who, especially with the last season of who with donna.. Doctor who is just trying to be light hearted and slightly humerous now..

I can't imagine that cutter wouldn't take some opportunity to discuss with his comrades exactly what his ex's motivation might be. Afetr all, she does seem to jeopardise one or more of them from time to time. There's no real sense of purpose about what and why the anomolies exist and if the team have a motivation for finding out. The action set pieces are all well done and the CGI fits in nicely. Its certainly a cut above the usual fare with its slick titles and production. You just feel it needs some objectives.

mmm like the show, although i think it failed to grab the audience as it were. i mean if i am 'picky' the fact that the croc was extremely clever cos it knew it shouldnt eat any of the main stars & had obviously been swatting up on the london a-z cos it knew exactly which roads to travel to get back to the museum! plus arent we taalking about quite a large croc here? well baring his in mind how did it fail to pull a meadium sized male (connor) into the anomoly, oh yeah & not forgetting the croc managed to remove the museum womans jacket off her before ripping out her throat. i tell you the dinosaurs wouldnt be extinct if croccy was in charge! i will keep watching as i do enjoy it, but i have to confess its a little bit more of a micky take at the moment instead of the wow factor. and please make helen cutter the next victim, that woman is seriously getting on my nerves!

Primeval - excellent as ever. And it's not a Doctor Who clone at all. Robin Hood is completely campy (as is all BBC features) and aimed squarely at under 10's (by the way, Sherwood forest is meant to have more than 10 sparse trees in it's entirety). Primeval is trying to do something different and in that it succeeds admirably, but the British public seems to think that if it's on ITV, then it's rubbish. I think prejudice is creeping into the viewer ratings. If you put Robin Hood on ITV it would probably lose half it's viewers just because it's on ITV. Primeval kicks Robin Hood off the television (and doesn't need to be politically correct in doing so either).

The show is utter garbage and has been from the day it started. Dr Who is vastly superior to this and gets better ratings plus is massively successful and wins awards. Hopefully the rumours are true and this is going to be axed in the ITV cutbacks. No More of this tripe please.

the only thing i didnt like is that clearly the whole point of this episode was to set it up for the series, the helen cliffhanger, the egyptian thing, as a result the episode in itself was just "creature comes out of anomaly, cutter chases round the city, creature goes back into anomaly". more focus on the individual episode in future is needed but apart from that it looks good for the rest of the series

First time I've seen it. Judging by this first one, cardboard cut out characterisation and ludicrous situations. At the end, the loading of the exhibit onto a lorry at the FRONT of the British Museum?? Oh and the predictable death of a traffic warden by badly designed CG crocodie (this'll get the plebs chuckling!) Someone should teach the animators a thing or two about basic anatomy and the scriptwriters a thing or two about wit.

Despite what the critics say, Primeval is a lot of fun. While this season premier might not have been quite as good as last seasons' premier episode it was still a teriffic romp. The chase through London was teriffic. I'm looking forward to this years' extended season. I only hope they can keep the quality up for ten episodes.

I LOVE IT. It's more-so the same as the first 2 seasons though, I don't personally think there is alot of difference.
