'Primeval' creator talks finale, future

Saturday, June 6 2009, 20:30 BST
By Neil Wilkes, Editor
Primeval's most eventful series to date came to its climax tonight with a finale that saw Helen meet her maker, Connor and Abby stranded in the past and poor Danny stranded even further in the past. So what next for the gang? Is Cutter definitely dead? And do rumours of a film version and US spinoff have weight? We caught up with Primeval co-creator Tim Haines for a chat about the show's future.

Series three was very busy - more episodes than before and lots of comings and goings. What was your own highlight?
"Oooh! Lots really. I think the airplane scenes with the Giganotosaurus in episode four worked nicely. I think the fungus monster was good, when I was worried at some point it wasn't going to be! The Knight story was charming and made a bit of a difference. Also I found Cutter's demise in episode three very moving. We were very unfortunate to be opposite Doctor Who that night - it was a big blow - but there we are. In the long run the figures returned to what they were before."

As for Cutter being killed off, was that always the plan or was it Dougie's decision?
"There's always been a Cutter-Helen arc that wasn't going to last forever because they were running such an intense relationship. Something had to give! The order in which it happened was just rather dictated by circumstances but it worked very well for the series. Jason [Flemyng] has been great coming in after Dougie left."

A few episodes later we also lost Jennifer/Claudia. Was that always a natural consequence of Cutter being killed?
"I think that was fallout and definitely part of it. Jenny, though, is very deliberately not gone forever, if we don't want it, but she was clearly emotionally attached. It was quite difficult to set a similar relationship up with her and Danny. It depends, she could come back."

With that said, could Cutter also come back?
"Everything is possible but we're very cautious about playing that card, even though I know at the end of series one they came back and changed time. I know this sounds contradictory, but fundamentally Primeval isn't a time travel show. It's a show about creatures popping up now, therefore we avoid all these time conundrums which could completely turn your storylines upside down. So other than the Jenny/Claudia contradiction, we haven't played that at all. As you know, Jim [Murray, aka Stephen] didn't come back in series three. Again, we don't need to close anything off - people could pop up in all sorts of ways - but we're reluctant to be too fast and loose with time."

I had lots of messages from fans, including a lot in Germany, who seemed to be quite angry with Stephen's departure - and again with Cutter's demise. What would you say to those fans?
"It's absolutely essential for this show to communicate that there is real jeopardy for the team. They do go into the most ridiculous scrapes and survive every week, but at some point something's got to give. Otherwise it becomes increasingly cartoonish. I do have enormous sympathy for the fans. We spend a lot of time getting people to like our characters and then when one dies, people can get annoyed about it or feel it's wrong. But at the same time, that's what drama's about."

In the finale we also lost Helen. Is it safe to say now that the Helen/Cutter/Stephen arc has come to an end?
"Yes. And the death of Helen leaves quite a lot of things that we will pick up in the fourth series. Helen disappeared for years and we never explored why, or how, or what she got up to. She left a diary behind and there are also other things she left behind which gives clues to something else that's going on. So although that's the end of the Helen-Cutter-Stephen triangle, it has echoes as we continue forward."

Has the fourth series been officially commissioned yet?
"No, not yet. Obviously we always have ideas about what we want to do but until we get the greenlight, we won't do anything. Adrian [Hodges, co-creator] and I have planned lots of things, but we're all waiting for the decision."

When I spoke to you and Adrian in the early days of Primeval, you said you had a three-year plan for the show. Now we've finished series three, do you have a clear idea of what's happening going forward with series four, five and beyond?
"We do have a plan for the foreseeable future. Moving forward we have two series ahead, with what we're thinking at the moment. Thinking beyond that would just do our heads in, so we don't! You can always lay down new tracks as you go, so that's what we'll seek to do if we're lucky enough to go again and again."

In the last month a movie version of Primeval has been confirmed. How does that fit in with the TV series? Should it be considered a separate project?
"It is somewhat a separate project because as you can imagine, the big studios are a law unto themselves. They will listen to us and of course be very understanding and try to take the essence of the show onto the big screen. In the end they are movie makers and they will make the film they think works. We've yet to see how that pans out."

Will it use the same cast?
"I have no idea. There is no onus on them to have the same cast, and like all these things, those decisions haven't been made yet but when they come to concentrate on it, they will decide what to do."

Finally, there have been reports of a US-based spinoff. Is there any truth to that?
"We're working on that with people in Canada for budgeting reasons. We're working on it. I don't know whether it will happen but it seems to be trundling along."

Is it a remake or is it a spinoff set in the same universe?
"I think our aim is that it lives in the same universe. Think CSI!"

Sorry but Cutter is the reason why this show was a float - for me and my viewing companions. If he doesn't return in season 4 then we're not watching.

What dinosaurs might come in during the 4th series, hopefully I might be able to see spinosaurus and velociraptor or maybe carnotosaur.

Love BBC America! An absolute fan of Primeval! But, with that said I truly think you should stop killing off your main characters. I know in the US we have a diffrent movie style but, one of the attractions for a series is to worry about the characters you have come to love. I think since I know you're going to kill them off I don't get as emotionaly attached. I would love to see Cutter come back. The series is absolutley Great! Keep up the good work!

Love the show, but it lost something when Cutter left. I really hope the show returns, but with Cutter.

i have just read on total sci fi that there WILL NOT be a 4th series. surely as primeval is generally in the top 10 watched itv shows it is worthwhile 2 carry it on whether they dont want to show drama before 9 o'clock or not!!! talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. i am very dissapointed as im sure are the writers!! they have said they wud not have left series 3 on such a cliffhanger had they known itv wouldnt be commissioning a series 4. thanks itv you will have a lot of very upset primeval fans now!!

WE....were expecting more from the cliffhanger.{Felt robbed}Series three for us was outstanding. We also feel Primeval have excelled as the series have moved forward and progressed. Our children have become very knowledgeable about the Pre-historic age, and Megan wants to become an expert in zoology. Abby is such a good role model we cannot get enough of her in this series.Their favourite was episode two, Hunted House! We are all willing Primeval to go to a fourth series as our time with Primeval has been exhilarating. There should be a movie but also the same cast. Primeval without Abby, Connor, Danny, Nick. "NO WAY" we would want to entertain it.

Primeval has been the best drama on tv. Series 3 has been brilliant. The monsters have improved so much since series 1. Abby and Connor are awesome, i think we all secretly want to be in this type of banter relationship.(Don't let them get together) it will spoil everything. They are unique in their own way.....that is why they should be in the Primeval Film I would go and watch. Primeval must go on to bigger and better adventures as we have grown to love everything it gives us.

I liked the 3rd season a lot. I cannot stand this cliffhanger so I hope there will be a fourth season. For the movie I really hope they use the characters we all know and love and not some Hollywood-actors. What I liked about season 3 was the humor, which was sometimes missing in the other seasons. I also think the animations got better with every episode! My favourite episodes of season 3 are episode 2, the one with the brontotheriums, and the last episodes. They were very exciting. I missed Rex a bit, he should be there more often. and I do not like the diictodons, they look too cute, remind me of Walt Disney charas not of dinosaurs. Personally I do not care about characters coming back (except for Jenny maybe), I hope you will come up with some new ideas and creatures instead. The Future Predators were part of the series way way way too often.

Also I don't get the whole "it's their job, it's dangerous" thing. If that's you only justification than your writing is really bad. I want to get attached to the characters in the show and not fear that they won't survive longer than 2 series. And Primeval isn't just and Abby/Connor show. I don't care about them that much and their whole "relationship" starts to annoy me. Bring on something more intresting. The comments here may suggest that we all LOVE the third series but I assure you, that if you took a look at other fan forums you'll see what the fans really think.

I absolutely love this show. The characters are awesome. The stories are great! I cheered when Helen was knocked off the cliff. I wondered if her remains were dug up with the dead clan. What would the archaeologists say? I was shocked to learn that episode 10 was the last of the season, as everyone is left hanging in the past. I can't wait until the next season. I have to know what happens next. I was sad to see Cutter die, but I understand the way the story goes. I would love to see a spin off set in America. Do you have any ideas when it might begin?

Primeval is, without a doubt, my favourite show on British TV- and the only one my family sit down and watch AS a family. From the youngest (4) to the eldest (39), we all love it. ITV would be foolish indeed not to recomission it for a fourth (and fifth) run. Series three has been spectacular- despite ITV's attempts to scupper the finale by delaying it a week resulting in me just buying the DVD and then watching it twice. Impossible Pictures do a phenomenal job with this- and I hope that the show continues, whether as ITV show, US show, film, series of novels, comics or audios. As long as there is new Primeval to be had, we shall be here to enjoy it.

we all love Primeval and the final episode. My decision is there should be a 4th series really soon also. my fave one is the final one especelly at the beginning when they found helen.I think you should do a decision really quickly! i'ma primeval fan and i'm 8.The fungus was so scary i was scared the cute ones are the daiiactdons bye bye hope theres lots more series.

I can't believe it! I loved Becker's fav gun, it was genius. But sadly they are all stranded. But when Helen said "Goodbye Danny" we all went "Bye Helen!"-Tell me you didn't!. Aww Abby/Connor was cute "Are you in a bikini?" "Yes. If you like" I can't wait for series 4- well i hope there will be anyway. I think a christmas special would be a good idea! I cried when Connor fell out of the tree, when Abby and Connor where in the tree talking, and when Danny got stuck! It so so sad, i mean im crying right now thinking about what might happen! It can't be left because we'd all assume they'd died. AND CONNOR AND ABBY CAN'T DIE, THEY'RE THE ONLY ORIGINAL ARC TEAM MEMBERS LEFT! From a loyal fan who is watching the finale re-run right now! Team Conby!
Marie, on June 7th, 2009
great finale and loved series 3, please make a series 4!!!!! you can't leave it like that. Can't believe Helen is dead she was a great baddie, would love to have Jenny/Claudia,Cutter and Stephen back one day.
Gary M, Manchester, on June 7th, 2009
Enjoyed this series of primeval! Knew when Nick died that Jenny had to go and shortly after that, Helen too. Otherwise the writers would have to keep explaining who helen was and why they were chasing her. The FX just get better and better but some of the plots are weak. The knight episode was poorly done and i noticed a lot of Alien/jurrasic park rip-off shots! roll on season 4 though!
Tracy, North West, on June 7th, 2009
i thought last nights episode was fantastic and i really hope series 4 gets commissioned coz there is no way it can end as it did. i love primeval and was gutted when cutter went but danny is fantastic as the leader. please please let us know as soon as there is any news about series 4. primeval is so much better than doctor who.
Alyse, on June 7th, 2009
I thought the final episode was absolutely fantastic. After a shaky start to Series 3, the episodes picked up the pace and there have been some absolutely storming eps in the latter half of the series. I, for one, am really, really hoping that a fourth series is commissioned, and I'm loving the fact that you've finally started to give Abby some meaty stuff to do. I hope that continues.
Gem, London, on June 7th, 2009
OMG I LOVE PRIMEVAL. However they are quite cruel to us leaving Danny in ape times and Abby n Connor with dinosaurs!! But that said its a great way to end a series coz everyone will watch the next series to see if and how they get of out the mess! PLEASE RECOMMISION PRIMEVAL!!
Eleanor, Liverpool, on June 7th, 2009
PLEASE make some more series of Primeval!!!!!!! DONT leave it on such a HORRIBLE cliffhanger!!!!!!
Sarah, on June 7th, 2009
If you make a fourth series please concentrate more on the whole plot and not just on action. Please make Primeval what it used to be. That beeing said series 3 wasn't as nearly as good as series 1 and 2. Oh and I am delighted that you would bring Jenny back, but please don't pair her up with danny then. That would be so cliched and wrong in my opinion. Also good to hear that you haven't closed the book on Cutter and Stephen yet.
