The actor, who plays DC Chris Skelton in the time-travel cop show, was keen to return as Becky's (Katherine Kelly) boyfriend Slug in the ITV1 soap.
However, he said he was forced to turn down an offer when he was contacted by the show's bosses last autumn.
He told The Sun: "I'm really disappointed because they asked for me back to start at the end of last October. I said I couldn't because I was filming Ashes until December.
"It was great that they asked me back but it's like buses sometimes. They all come at once and you can only get on one."
The 33-year-old added: "But I'd be happy to play Slug again."
