Closing 'Ashes' brings 5.4m to BBC1

Despite winning the 9pm slot with 23% of the audience, it was 1.6m down on its opening episode. Ashes's closing instalment also drew 1.6m fewer viewers than that of its predecessor Life On Mars.
Yesterday the BBC announced that the show, which stars Philip Glenister as no-nonsense cop Gene Hunt, would return for a second series.
The opposition at 9pm was led by ITV1, where Trial and Retribution won 4.3m (18%). On Channel 4 Cutting Edge: Sleeping with My Sister attracted 1.9m (8%), while Five's House reached 1.8m (8%).
Comedy pair That Mitchell and Webb Look and The Catherine Tate Show, both on their final episodes, drew 1.6m (7%) and 1.4m (6%) to BBC Two at 9pm and 9.30pm respectively.
