Episode Three

Gene and Alex apprehend some villains smuggling drugs inside garden gnomes, with the ornamental creatures later being kept in the police station office. A woman called Nina is found nearby crying on the banks of the river. She is kept under observation at the station but refuses to say much.

A prostitute called Trixie enters the station to report that she was raped on a boat and her left breast was slashed by a knife. The wound is consistent with the recent murder of a woman called Delphine. Alex believes the killer and rapist is a religious fanatic as Trixie reveals that he recited a passage from The Bible to her.

While out interviewing local prostitutes, Alex punches Gene in the face following a verbal clash between the pair. Alex later gets drunk in Luigi's restaurant and has carnal relations with a random guy she picked up at the establishment. Alex, Gene, Chris and Ray attend a fancy dress party on the boat where the rape took place, looking for a man who fits the vague description provided by Trixie. They arrest a man who remarks to Gene that Alex is morally dirty for her suggestive outfit and behaviour.

The young man, called Ryan, is represented in the formal interview by Evan White - the man who will eventually be the godfather to Alex's daughter Molly. Ryan is released due to a lack of evidence and Trixie admits to Gene that she made up the rape allegation because fellow prostitute Nina, the real victim, wouldn't come forward.

Ryan takes a prostitute at knifepoint and is rearrested, but Nina and the police fear that the jury won't believe her word. After his release, Ray plants the garden gnomes in his car and he is arrested on suspicion of cocaine smuggling.
