Episode Four

Episode Four
This episode found the right balance between a self-contained plot, the ongoing mystery surrounding the murder of Drake's parents and moments of disposable humour.

Crucially, Alex Drake's nauseating smugness was toned down. Instead, a good degree of pathos was generated for her character as she roamed around her childhood home and bedroom, with Keeley Hawes neatly conveying the mixed emotions that came flooding back. This was effectively interspersed with flashbacks and even a burst of Shakin' Stevens's 'Green Door'. You just can't go wrong there.

The murder of Martin Kennedy was central to the narrative and neatly wrapped up, although perhaps too conveniently. Along the way, it did manage to coax out a series of intriguing revelations - mainly concerning Caroline Price's dodgy dealings in both the sack and revolutionary meetings. The potential government conspiracy that emerged will hopefully be expanded in future episodes. Amusingly, the fear of being bugged allowed Chris and Ray to demonstrate their double act, with their somewhat visible surveillance methods a joy to behold.

After a decidedly mixed start to the series, this fourth episode is hopefully a sign of what's to come.
