Episode Eight

Episode Eight
This moderately successful finale to the first season was greatly improved by a clever twist ending and a magnificent performance by Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt.

The episode initially threatened to lapse once more into a nauseating display of Alex Drake's smugness and arrogance - interspersed with the footage of young Alex and her red balloon yet again. Her irritating habit of thinking aloud and using French words certainly didn't help to endear us to her cause, but Keeley Hawes managed to salvage the ropey characterisation through a searingly honest farewell scene with her mother in the police station.

The return of Arthur Layton as the bad guy appeared to be rather predictable and mundane at first. After all, he has barely featured since the very first episode. However, his presence worked well as a means to conceal the real truth - that Alex's dad was behind both the bomb and the clown all along. As far as shock twists go, this was very impressive and not signposted at all.

Guest star Geoffrey Palmer did his usual dependable turn as Lord Scarman and DC Chris Skelton was on hand to provide the comedy, but the real highlight came when Gene Hunt delivered a memorable and powerful speech. Standing up to Scarman's findings, Gene gave him a serious earful and praised both the unity of his team and their hardcore policing methods in the process. The rant was up there with Winston Churchill's "we shall fight them on the beaches..." rally cry.

There's far more to Gene - and Glenister - than the ability to be brutish and brash though. The vulnerable, lonely side of the character was magnificently teased out during dinner with Drake - which surprisingly wasn't a punishment for Gene instigated by Scarman.

Ashes To Ashes has certainly been flawed, but capable of providing great entertainment throughout the season. In many ways, this episode encapsulates this in your proverbial nutshell.

Brilliant. Wot an ending! This is actually a better story than Life On Mars - cos Sam never really had any ties to either time. (watch all the Keeley haters jump all over that comment!). Other amazing bits: Shaz rocking up in the wedding dress, ray eating a deep fried penis and "You've been Quattro'd". Genius.

Just watched the finale again and it was brilliant and worth far more than three stars. The reveal of Drake's dad as the clown was brilliant, never saw that coming! And I loved Gene's speech to Scarman. There was so much to like in this series, but it is nothing without Gene so I'm glad his screentime has increased. I agree to a point about not having the same empathy with Drake as you would with Sam Tyler, but they needed to make them different. Sam didn't have a clue what was going on but Alex does. I think the fact that in the final episode evertything she thought she knew was turned on its head will hopefully soften the chaacter in series 2. I also have to say how much I loved Chris and Ray in this series, even more so than in Life On Mars, the other great double act on the show. And finally I hope we see more of Viv in series 2 as he could be a really good addition to the team.

Was lucky enough to have seen this show. Wish they'd comment on the entire "other dimension" thing though as apposed to comas/time-travel. it could work just as well. I believe the X-Files did a WWII/Alternate time travel story of a similar theme just as dark & twisted. But I guess its up to the creators. Ashes to Ashes was a cross between The Bill & Miami Vice (the first boat sequence sold me that one) keep it up. I would love to see Gene Hunt wake up in 2008 for a special two parter. It would be awesome. How would he cope with a mobile, computer & professional driving methods of today? :)

Loved A2A - genius twist ending that was an out of the blue shocker. Gene is the reason I watch though one of the best characters to grace my TV ever...only tiny let down Shaz should have stayed dead was a complete cop-out and ruined the emotion and tension of that episode with her 'death scene' and Chris's reaction. Still 5* though! And all the New Romantic stuff was brilliant more, more, more!

Ashes to Ashes was superb. Like others, Life on Mars had passed me by but I have now caught up on the boxed sets. This has to be the most original concept to hit our screens in years and yet, it really does capture some truths. Gene's rant was a real highlight and the twist at the end was a true shocker. More like this from the Beeb and I will stop moaning about the licence fee!

Cliched, parody. Weak plots, not plausible, or totally predictable. does not sum up the feel of 1981. feel it was rushed and became complacent. Such a shame when life on mars was superb.Keely hawes utterly abysimmal in this

Mostly women giving Gene the thumbs-up, I notice - ho ho. Quite right too. How come no-one twigged that the clown and Tim Price were one and the same? I worked that one out by episode 2 (smug, moi?). Great speech by Gene in the finale. Hope we see more of Viv in the next series - he really developed as a character, as did the delightfully complex Shaz. Roll on Series 2 – there's all that Spooky MI6 paranoid conspiracy stuff to unravel, and the potential for Alex to have a relationship of some kind with her young self. Christmas 2009 special: Gene and Alex become Dr Who's new companions.... (in fact - Phil Glenister as the new Dr Who - there's a thought!)

This episode was one of the best ever, including episode six. The bit where the dad turned into the clown, had me on the edge of my seat. Where Gene took little Alexs' hand brought a lump to my throat. And when Alex and Gene where having dinner and he was just rambling on, I thought -awww he's so sweet- The end music, Supertramp - Take the long way home was an excellent choice, I think Evan is a devious wierd old man lol. Brilliant ending to a brilliant T.V. show, 2009 is a long way off, a whole year without Gene and Alex, Chris and Shaz, (thinks of a pair) Ray and his lovely singing voice -referring to the song 2,4,6,8 its never too late out of the last episode- haha. Loving it Ray. Loving the show ab-fab 100/100 =]
