Was 'Merlin's return a magical one?

Prince Arthur and his wannabe-wench Merlin appeared to have gradually developed a bond (just about platonic!) during the first season and we felt a real sense of progression in terms of their rewarding relationship. However, the pair seem to have regressed back to their early days together - especially with the speed at which Arthur mistrusts, chastises and 'dumps' his loyal servant in favour of total stranger Cedric. "I just want Arthur to trust me and see me for who I am," whines Merlin, presumably before he reaches for the medieval equivalent of a Barbra Streisand LP.
Conversely, this fight for Arthur's attention also serves up some of the episode's strongest material as Cedric slyly plots to sabotage Merlin's duties and steal his thunder. It's hard not to giggle when Arthur finds Merlin passed out in the stable, face lodged in manure and oblivious to the fact that the horses have been unleashed. "Have you been at the cider?" amusingly asks the Prince.

The visual feel and scope of the episode is more impressive than ever, particularly with the eerie and atmospheric sequences of the winged creatures attacking the Camelot residents under the striking moonlight. The scene with the Dragon and Merlin was aesthetically pleasing too, and also featured an exchange between the pair that fortunately didn't end in the usual cryptic clue from the fire-breathing beast. Merlin's promise to release him could lead to some intriguing developments somewhere down the line. If only Merlin could promise the luscious Morgana some more screen time…
This episode, 'The Curse of Cornelius Sigan', could have seamlessly fitted into Merlin's first season midway through. In one respect, such familiarity reminds us why these characters quickly endeared themselves to millions of viewers. It also highlights that the show will need to stray from the formula and find more narrative magic if it's going to hang around on our screens long enough to see the Dragon released.

I started watching series 2 but it was too boring to continue. Nimue never returned in this season, which was a huge disappointment. I thought she was going to be The Lady of the Lake, but no. Ugh, until she returns, whith Michelle Ryan as actress, I won't watch it. And I have to disagree, Doctor Who is so much better than Merlin.

We all absolutely love this show. It has everything family entertainment could want and it fills that early evening Doctor Who/Robin Hood void brilliantly.

Mackenzie Crook was definitely the highlight of the episode, being able to steal away all the scenes he was in! Can't believe Merlin and Arthur's friendship sort of ended for sometime there. It seems quite unusual for Arthur to put his trust in someone so shady and new like Cedric over Merlin, who had proven himself time and time again as a friend more than a servant. Good episode, but I think there are better ones yet to come!

The regression in A&M friendship was there so that Merlin would feel tempted at the end I guess. To be Arthur's slave with Arthur and everybody oblivious of his power or to "come out" and have everybody afraid of him. He'd have nothing to think about if he felt happy in his current position. Oh and Arthur taking his shirt off all the time is a nice character development :D

I found it difficult to deal with the fact that Arthur and Merlin's relationship took that much of a step back. They are supposed to progress. It seems that the plot took over the natural progression of the whole programme. On the other hand, I found it very witty and exciting! Go Merlin!

I have to agree. it was unpleasant seeing the friendship between Arthur and Merlin take a huge step back. It seems like this was a left over script from last season. It would be nice to see some continuity from the writers. I would have liked to see Crook as a recuring character. his performance was, as expected, was fun. He should have been this season's Michelle Ryan.

Arthur comes across more and more as a big kid with very few endearing qualities. I thought a relationship of trust had grown between him and Merlin by now. Yet suddenly we see him turning his back on his old friend in favour of someone that anyone with any sense would be instantly wary of. I'd already started to grow bored with the theme of 'the hero must save the day without anyone discovering he's a wizard'. Yet still it seems to be some sort of 'prime directive' in the story. I think it would be interesting if Arthur learned the truth about his servant, and how much he needs his help.

Merlin is portrayed too weak in the script. All that whinging. He's a powerful sorcerer, even with the king's restriction of not using magic he should/could be more forceful. Plus, nobody seemed to notice he "magically" appeared to save the day out of a locked dungeon? The script needs tinkering

somebody let the kids into the GCI toolbox. All that money spend on effects. Maybe some of it should have gone into the script.

Iwas disappointed . The episode was clumsily used to re-start the story and had demolished the storylines that had developed last series. I hope this was just for the opening episode otherwise they will have ruined what last year, had turned out to be an all round quality production. They seemed to be trying to produce it to their idea of who the audience might be. I don't think longevity is achieved or high viewing figures amassed with a magical fairytale by producing it to pander, it has to have integrity in order for the fairy tale to be believed and therefore enjoyed. Last series Merlin had integrity and fairytale combined which was key to the special entertainment that combination achieved, which is how the Harry Potter experience specialised it's magic on it's the audience. This first episode of Merlin was a let down, I hope it was just for this first episode.

The boys are back in town! What a blistering start to Season 2. Fast paced, superb CGI and the wonderful McKenzie Crook...but for me, nothing beats the boys and their banter. Loved the fact that the whole of Camelot was in peril...and I couldn't leave my sofa to put the kettle on! The action was gritty, the love interest twinkling between Gwen and Arthur and it was simply bliss to relax into a bit of escapism. Role on Uther et al. Long Live the King! Final note has to go to Arthur "Merlin, have you been on the cider?" Thank you BBC 1 for sprinkling a little stardust on a Saturday night...

Is it me or is this programme a bit New Labour orientated. Uther 'Brown' Pendragon never listens to a soul and then when the fit hits the shan, he scurries around trying to fix a problem as though it was a complete suprise! As for posh boy Arthur, he behaves each and every week as though he doesn't know Merlin at all, it's as though they have only just met?? Uther Brown then says we must 'learn from our lessons of the past' remind you of anyone?

I guess they have gone back a bit in terms of Merlin and Arthur's for people who hadn't seen the first series and to refresh our memories about the show. I will look forward to seeing the rest of the series to see how things develop. Apart from that I thought it was a beautifully filled and enjoyable first episode. Really loved the preview of the rest of the series too. Am v v excited. I LOVE MERLIN!
