In a Radio Times web-chat, the actor said: "I am happy with the ending. The scripts are very powerful, heartfelt and brutally honest. It... honours the fans and the legend."

The 24-year-old added that he was "a little surprised with some aspects of the ending" - which will air on BBC One on Christmas Eve.

"But I think that was because... the writers have been brave in what they want to achieve with it," he explained.

Merlin's Katie McGrath (Morgana) recently told Digital Spy that the show's final two-parter "really answer all the questions that have been posed throughout the past five years" while Bradley James (Arthur) also told DS that he was "happy" with how the series ends.

Merlin continues this Saturday at 8.15pm on BBC One with new episode 'The Drawing of the Dark'.
