'Merlin' star Bradley James rules out spinoff role

Merlin star Bradley James has confirmed that he will not be involved in any potential spinoff project.

The BBC fantasy drama aired its series finale on December 24, but there have been rumours of a possible new spinoff show or film adaptation.

"It was something discussed," James told the Los Angeles Times. "But I think it's time for me to hang up the chain mail, to be honest with you, and pass the mantle on to the next person who shall take on the throne of Arthur Pendragon."

The 29-year-old added that he is looking forward to "different challenges" following the conclusion of Merlin.

"The post-Merlin era is an exciting time to look forward to," he said. "Variety is the spice of life.

"That's the fantastic thing about acting - all the different challenges it can provide you with. To limit yourself just to one would be foolish, therefore I'm looking forward to different things that come my way."

James previously told Digital Spy that he would "never say never" to reprising his Merlin role, but added that any revival would have to made "for the right reasons".

"We could've stayed on and made a series six and made lots of money... but it wouldn't have been right," he explained. "I don't think that's what you need to be aiming to do in life - you need to be creating good things that entertain people and I'm not sure series six would've done that."
