S01E01: 'The Dragon's Call'
Could the debut episode of Merlin successfully establish a new take on the Arthurian mythology and feature an absorbing self-contained plot? Not quite, as until the rousing finale events were more grinding than gripping.

The 'body swap' plot was certainly too over-familiar for the opening instalment of a major production. It was severely lacking in incident until the brilliant climactic sequence in which the revenge-fuelled witch cast her singing spell over the court. If only she could go on X Factor and do the same.

As the antagonist, Eve Myles showcased her versatility and gave the performance an ambiguous tone that ensured she wasn't mere villain fodder, but a grieving mother fuelled by anger over her son's death. Similarly, Anthony Head's turn as King Uther Pendragon also raised many questions about the character's true nature.

The other roles were particularly well cast too, especially Colin Morgan as the eponymous hero. He doesn't just look perfect for the part of a young wizard, but also perfectly draws out the clash of supreme power and adolescent awkwardness within Merlin.

There was one moment that left a sour note though, when Merlin took a swing at Arthur after some baiting. This wasn't ideal behaviour from the supposed hero in a family show, using his fists ahead of his brain. Yet it may ultimately work in the show's favour in future episodes should the character experience a 'passage of rites' and move away from any more bouts of aggression.

'The Dragon's Call' impressively showcased the lavish spectacle of the show, with fine direction immersing us within the Camelot environment. However, the dragon himself was frustratingly lacking in screen time and didn't manage to establish his presence enough, despite some dazzling effects work and John Hurt's world-weary voiceover.

Overall, the narrative was fairly pedestrian until the final quarter, but interest was sustained through a range of appealing performances from an excellent cast that were given little more than bog-standard dialogue.

As a 'pilot', it fell far short of the brilliance of the reinvented Doctor Who's debut story 'Rose', which established the back story and characters in perfect combination with a self-contained invasion plot. Still, there's more than enough promise in this series to justify tuning in next week.

I loved this series since episode 1, never missed an episode, it's odd come to think of it I don't view Merlin as the legendary old wise Merlin, I see this as an entirely new story, with two young protangonists, so it's best to tune in with an open mind and not set on seeing the original legend but an interesting new series.

‘Merlin’, which was aired last Saturday at 6:30pm, was a huge success. BBC has got a massive hit on their hands and has lived up to expectations of their previous hit show ‘Robin Hood’. I think that it is great family entertainment.

It wasn't Eve Myles singing. She was miming to the soprano Emma Brain-Gabbott. That was the best bit. The show's a bit silly but I don't think it's meant to be serious!

It wouldn't be so bad if they'd called it "jack the sorcerer"; then we wouldn't be so disappointed: I was expecting it to be about the Merlin & Arthur & Uther & Morgaine etc., that I already know about.

It's teatime entertainment for a Saturday, so of course it's not gonna be the best budget-wise or dialogue/narrative/special effects, or whatever, but 'tis still entertaining, and I suppose that's all that matters in a tv show. I think Colin Morgan's wonderous, and it's good that they're having Merlin as a young person; the old wizard-type guys're cliched now, what with DUmbledore, Gandalf, etc...I also enjoy the sexual tension between Merlin and Arthur...just a shame that the BBC'll not follow that plotline, see above RE teatime drama. Anyway, I likes it, and not just for all the yaoi potential:) *Laughs* It says to type in the word 'Balzac'!!

The CGI is rubbish, the plot of the series predictable (The premise of every episode will be Merlin protecting Arthur. Merlin will fall for Guin but learn he has to get her to love Arthur) and some of the logic baffling; The dragon flies off at the end of the conversation despite being chained to a rock!

After one episode, I'm hooked. I really enjoyed it. Colin Morgan is great, and one to watch out for. I'm so looking forward to Saturday evenings again. Eve Myles was fab too, (as she always is). I hope that people who say that its poor and that they wont watch again, will just "magically disappear" and let those who appreciate good Saturday night TV enjoy the programme.

I really enjoyed this first episode as I adored the Robin Hood series I thought this could certainly come even near to rivaling it. But with Jonas Armstrong leaving maybe it could. A very talented cast especially Katie Mc Grath and the versatile Colin Morgan from theatre to Dr. Who an exciting new talent.

Awful. Can't take Anthony Head seriously, couldn't take a liking to any of the characters overall, wasn't particuarly impressed with the plot. Only thing that kept me tuned in was Eve Myles, and that was because i wanted to hear if she was going to actually sing. Not a chance in hell I'm watching that again.

It's superb! Merlin has made my top ten after just one episode. Bring on Saturday, can't wait for more. It's wonderful to have a light-hearted take on the King Arthur legend at last.

So the witch a.k.a. Gwen-from-Torchwood had enough magic to disappear in a puff of smoke but couldn't save her son from execution?
