S01E03: 'The Mark Of Nimueh'
It's still early days, but Merlin has yet to hit its stride, although the heightened dramatic conflict in this episode showcases the potential of the series. Merlin and Uther use different methods in a bid to protect their loved ones or kingdom, but both find that the consequences can be fatal. Sadly, their real enemies are lacking that killer instinct.

A Big Bad finally arrives in the shape of saucy sorceress Nimueh, although it's hardly the most dynamic of entrances. Well, unless increasingly repetitive reaction shots of Michelle Ryan staring into a cauldron of water are considered dynamic.

Again, the Dragon makes a frustratingly mundane appearance and cuts into the budget for the episode. Couldn't the money have been better spent on making Nimueh's clay monster into something other than an Alien clone? Why does she need this creature to poison the water anyway?

It all ends in an anticlimactic fight sequence, with the supposedly scary beast doing little more than bare its prize set of gnashers (perhaps on loan from Simon Cowell) and growl at the Camelot youngsters. The BBC could have hired a Yorkshire terrier instead.

King Uther experiences his finest scenes to date, with Anthony Head drawing out the tangled moral complexities within a character desperately trying to do the right thing for his people - even if it costs lives.

Sadly, the flirtations between Merlin and Guinevere feel awfully forced. The actors, despite their best efforts, have simply been fed a procession of awfully lifeless dialogue that tries desperately to conjure up some romantic frisson. Given the staggering lack of chemistry between the pair, not even one of Merlin's spells could overcome that difficulty.

Nonetheless, Merlin's decision to use sorcery to save Guinevere's dying father led to the most dramatically effective scenes of the series so far. Seeing the innocent girl captured and sentenced to death by fire was an overdue reminder of the potentially dangerous repercussions of Merlin's actions.

Nimueh looks set to stay and weave her magic, and the backstory between her and Uther sounds fairly intriguing. Let's hope that her box of tricks will include more than just a useless lump of clay in future.

It was never gonna be the best, but here's me not caring. Sure, the effects aren't the best and nor is the lack of budget, but I think that there's a lot that makes up for that...like the Merlin+Arthur romance, and...Well, I guess just Colin Morgan being aweosme as ever:) And if you don't like it, DON'T WATCH IT!! I'm glad for the change from the usual schedule of Big Bother and Britain Lacks Talent. And I'm all for changing the legend around; needs lots of modernising. They've done that with Gwen, now I'm just waiting for Arthur and Merlin to kiss...'cept it's the BBC and that probably won't happen. And it's the 6th century in Christian Britain...so they'd be unhappy.

And finally Merlin hits its stride...the script is still a bit woo-er, but when Merlin has the right moments, it really gets them right. Take the scene where Merlin peers through the window as Gwen's father revives - it's perfectly realised, and actually convinces me there is some credibility in Merlin and Gwen's romance. Antony Head is also quite brilliant - as the reviewer said, he brings through so much complexity...his character actually appears deep and multi-layered, unlike some of the more (ahem) shallow ones...

The dullest of episodes so far. I'm alone in thinking the kid who plays Merlin is a bit boring, aren't I? He's just so devoid of spark. His head looks funny, too.

Another pleasant outing - this series is improving slightly week by week. Next week's spiders look good - let's hopoe the rest of the episode is as good.

Mot bad. On the whole though, some of the dialogue does sound just a bit too modern and is lazily written. Better script writers are needed.

Hmm again the more i watch this the more it seems to be rushed, it doesnt seem to flow as well as other programs that are currently on. Currently it just looks cheap..

Back and impressed once more. The relationship between Merlin and Arthur is developing into what we know it will, and the relationship between the main characters and their audience is also looking very promising. I do understand the shows critics, though think they're taking it all a tad too seriously! Why don't they go and watch Strictly and bring out the horrors and falseness of reality TV and leave shows like this to the people with imagination? Fantastic series, can't wait for the next episode. Well done, BBC.

lol, I didn't even realise they were supposed to be flirting! I love Merlin, but I'm also like an AVID robin hood lover and they really need to shape this programme up! this is supposed to be my medicine for them killing off marian! so far, the storylines seem pretty much the same: Merlin sees a problem, Merlin goes to the dragon, the dragon doesn't really say anything helpful, Merlin gets annoyed, he goes back to gaius who tells him he's irresponsible and then he suddenly realises and saves the day. Hopefully, the two parter is going to change that rythm, but i have to say that I really loved the whole woman underground thing. She's so beautiful! And Arthur's so hot. I've just got to say that.

Another great episode.. Great nail-biting moments and lots more special magic from merlin. The best bit was when the clay monster attacked the gang. No doubt we will see more of Nimueh's twisted magic!
