Merlin: The hype starts here

Published Friday, Aug 29 2008, 11:33 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 15 comments
The buzz is starting to build around Merlin, BBC One's big new Saturday night drama starting next month.

The series - a creative retelling of the well-travelled Arthurian legend - stars Richard Wilson (as Merlin's mentor Gaius), Anthony Head (as the tyrannical King Uther) and Michelle Ryan (as wicked sorceress Nimueh). Remarkably the show has already been picked up by US network NBC, which plans to air it as part of its Sunday night lineup from January.

I spent a couple days on set earlier this week and can confirm that the hype is very well-placed. There'll be much more Merlin magic from me in the coming weeks, including the first interview with the boy Merlin himself (young actor Colin Morgan, recently seen in the Doctor Who episode 'Midnight'), but for now whet your appetite with this epic trailer:

need more magic from merlin. this would make it more exciting seeing how he gets away with it during each episode. i would rather see that than wait till magic is allowed in the last episodes. and then get it all at once.

I love the idea of banned magic - gives it a very interesting twist. The appearance of Will Mellor as what seems to be the baddy/henchman jarred a bit for me - although I'll reserve judgement. It's just, he's no Richard Armitage - is he?

Wow!

Apoligies, I see my error. Richard Wilson plays Merlin's mentor Gaius. So, who then, plays Merlin? (Read the piece! -Neil)

It looks wonderful, but Richard Wilson isn't filling Merlin's shoes in my view. Hopefully, he will redeem himself proper in the forthcoming installments...

I agree , this looks so much better then Spooks Code 9 , I will be watching the first episode when it is on TV.

Looks a bit like Sword's and Sorcery meets Harry Potter Book 8. Bring it on !

So this is obviously where the BBC budget has gone this year (well its obviously not been spent on things like code 9 now has it!)
