'Merlin' Q&A: It's Richard Wilson!
Published Wednesday, Sep 16 2009, 12:43 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 7 comments
Of the many characters that sort-of-died-but-didn't-really in the first series finale of Merlin, the loss of Merlin's long-suffering mentor Gaius would surely have been the hardest to take.
Newly reinvigorated and back for series two, Camelot's resident physician faces some equally perilous quandries next time around - not least of all, the ever-present threat of execution should the tyrannical King Uther discover that he's been harbouring Merlin (and now Morgana, too).
Next up in our procession of Merlin Week interviews, we speak to veteran actor Richard Wilson about the journey ahead for Gaius - and the likelihood of a third series in 2010.
Could Merlin survive without Gaius? Does Merlin need him any more? Add your comments to this entry below!

Gaius is one one of the most enjoable and likeable characters in Merlin. he gives that "CLASSIC" status to this show (together with Antony) im very pleased that they didnt killed him in 1st season and i hope he will survive through upcoming seasons too

Narratively speaking, we the audience need a human character like Gaius who knows Merlin's secret and is someone he goes to for advice. Without him, there is no reason for Merlin to speak about magic with anyone, leaving us in the dark, or Merlin speaking inanely to the air. Were Gaius to leave/die/etc the writers would need to replace him with someone who serves the same function by having that person figure out Merlin's secret and be trusted by him. It's likely we'll see Merlin grow more independent of Gaius, but I say he's still needed as an emotional touchstone for Merlin's character. I can hardly wait to see where they go next this Saturday!

Should he really be giving so much away? Looking forward to a darker Morgana. Can't wait for Saturday!
