Adrian Hodges, who also oversees Primeval, told Sci Fi Wire: "It confronts our deepest fears when everything else is stripped away. Do you fall apart or fight or retreat?"
The original incarnation of Survivors, which is set on a virus-ravaged Earth, was written by Dalek creator Terry Nation and first shown in 1975.
The remake, written by Hodges, will feature Doctor Who actress Freema Agyeman, Bonekickers' Julie Graham and Hotel Babylon's Max Beesley.
Hodges added: "We completed the pilot and it's ready to premiere, and we're well into shooting the second block."
Survivors will be screened on BBC One in late 2008.
