2010 TV Preview: 'Survivors' series 2
Published Saturday, Dec 12 2009, 07:04 GMT | By Dan French | 12 comments
Next up in our 2010 TV preview is Survivors, which returns to BBC One for its second series next month.
Series one ended with Greg being shot and a haunting scene with Abby's son (previously presumed dead). Unfortunately, at that point, Abby was too busy being kidnapped by armed men from the elusive laboratory.
So, where does the story go in series two? Recently, we caught up with the show's creator Adrian Hodges to pose that very question. According to the man himself, the game is upped, the stakes are higher, and more lives are on the line. Which of our favourite Survivors will be tragically killed off? Hit 'play' below to see what Adrian had to say:

I am really disappointed; the original concept was just how would we survive in the face of collapse of society - how would we organise food, fuel, communication and rebuilding links with others. You are not going to find out in this remake - this is more mad max than anything resembling the original premise, with shallow characterisation, bizarre storylines lurching from one outlandish catastrophe to another and as for the government laboratory storyline....words fail me.A great opportunity to make an intelligent update of the original series completely and totally botched.A real shame as with this having stolen the identity I do not expect another production to be commissioned to fulfil what could have been.

It was tripe. Not a patch on the original series, set only to appeal to braindead idiots that think Eastenders is the height of TV drama. If some of the reviews on here are anything to go by I'm not surprised that the BBC can pass this shite off on an open mouthed bunch of gormless zombies who wouldn't know decent writing if a good script was stapled to thier eyelids. Just as long as there's some exciting music a bit of a fight and some sex you're all happy. Wake up you bloody sheep and stop accepting this simplistic, childish, twaddle!

I wonder who will die in episode 1. My money is on Al. He's not appeared in any of the promotion. Also, Steve Day, no one is asking you to tune in. Perhaps you could spend the one hour a week re-reading the book?

I love Survivors, I, too, wish it had more episodes, only six episodes goes so fast. I have got the 1st series on DVD now, so I'm watching it again to catch up with everything in time for 12th Jan. I am most looking forward to seeing how Tom and Anya's relationship develops in the next series, I think Tom is the most interesting character, past-wise, I want to know what he did.

This version of Terry Nations wonderfuul story is a disgrace, its nothing like the book and its more a case of the BBC ensuring its ticked all of the boxes in order to appease the politically correct. Its just a collection of gay, elderly, disabled, ethnic minority, left wing Landaners following a reject script from East Enders, It is truly appauling and BBC drama at its worst, just some very predictable badly acted nonsese by people trying desperately to ensure they remain diverse, politically correct and multi cultural, no matter how unrealistic. Day of the Trifffids is much darker and more entertaining in its new form.

I watch very little TV but survivors made me stop whatever and watch. I can't explain why it was just great! I can't wait to be enthralled again.

I have been looking forward to this for ages. I hope the series is as good, if not better, than the last series. I wonder what is in store for the older charactors, even the 'baddies' at the store.

Abby. At least, I bloomin' hope so! Eeek, can't wait for survivors to be back, it's up there with Ashes to Ashes for my list of "excited about 2010 because..."

Totally agree with Karen. Adrian Hodges should be ashamed of himself. That interview says it all "More of the same" well that's imaginative Adrian.."a very energetic high octane series" Really? Don't we have enough of those? Or was this the only default position you could adopt? "big death" Ya think? What like 90% of the worlds population? I think 'big' might just about cover that then. And a Pandemic (sorry Adrian what you're writing about is an epidemic but lets not get bogged down with little details like that) "we're not a show about the grim reality of a virus", yup with you on that one. Although the original idea as Terry Nation postulated it was indeed a show about it, rather than your version which is just Eastenders with a cold. Oh and finally he admits that there have been other shows that have started from a realistic premise and ended up as a different thing. By which I assume he means that when the idea is exhausted they just turn it into yet another thinly disguised soap and milk it for another 11 series just to make sure everyone on the whole planet is sick of it by then. Maybe he's been commissioned to write it like this (which I doubt as he's also an exec prod) but I really ask again what was the point of just taking the name of the show and the characters and writing something exactly the same as every other recent soap/action/adventure romp that the BBC has spawned in the last 10 years? Probably just to pay the mortgage I assume. Shame there are no visionaries like Nation left to write the really engaging stuff any more. yes drama has to be enjoyable but that doesn't mean it can't examine real issues as well. It doesn't have to be all crash, bang, boom, bosh if a writer is worth his title he or she should be able to surprise and move an audience without such tired, hackneyed old clichés. Still..pays the mortgage I suppose.
