'Glee' dances over to Sky1 with 640k

Season three of Glee launched on Sky1 with 640k on Thursday evening, while The X Factor USA premiere was watched by 1.1m on ITV2, the latest audience data has shown.

Glee, poached by Sky from Channel 4, averaged 639k (2.8%) on Sky1 in the 9pm hour, only around half the audience that tuned in for the finale of season two on digital channel E4 in June.

Also on Thursday night was the premiere of The X Factor USA - shown in the US the previous day - which had 1.13m (4.9%) between 8pm and 10pm, along with 271k (1.4%) on +1.

In a strong night for ITV2, panel show Celebrity Juice amused 1.2m (6.6%) from 10pm and 230k (2.2%) on timeshift.

On the terrestrial channels, Billy Connolly's Route 66, featuring the comic travelling down the iconic US highway, had 4.71m (20.7%) on ITV1 and 215k (1.2%) on +1.

BBC One's Watchdog was seen by 4.12m (17.7%) in the 8pm hour and Crimewatch fetched 3.82m (16.9%) from 9pm. Question Time quizzed 2.22m (19.8%) from 10.45pm.

Country House Rescue grabbed 1.32m (5.6%) in the 8pm slot and 187k (0.8%) on +1. New series Educating Essex launched with 1.4m (6.2%) and 204k (1.2%) on timeshift. Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares served up 1.08m (6.4%) from 10pm, and 221k (2.4%) on +1.

If Walls Could Talk captivated 1.3m (6.4%) on BBC Two in the 7pm hour, before Monty Hall's Great Irish Escape mustered 1.43m (6.1%) from 8pm. Britain's Flying Past educated 1.88m (8.3%) in the 9pm slot and 105k (0.5%) on the BBC HD channel. Mock The Week amused 1.8m (9.4%) from 10pm.

Channel 5's How Do They Do It? quizzed 444k (2.1%) from 7.30pm and When Killer Whales Attack had 911k (3.9%) in the 8pm slot. The Big Celebrity Swim captivated 596k (2.6%) from 9pm and Big Brother continued with 1.31m (7.6%) from 10pm. Spin-off Big Brother's Bit On The Side entertained 525k (5.5%) from 11pm.

Overall, ITV1 took primetime with 22.2% (+1: 0.7%) against BBC One's 20.7%. BBC Two ranked in third with 7.1%, ahead of Channel 4 with 5.2% (+1: 0.7%) and Channel 5 with 3.7%.

Elsewhere, Don't Tell The Bride averaged 444k (1.9%) in the 8pm slot, and new show Young Soldiers captivated 426k (1.9%) from 9pm. Lee Nelson's Well Good Show entertained 523k (3.5%) from 10.30pm.
