US ratings update: 'House', 'Fringe', '90210'

Our second gander at TV ratings across the pond takes in one established medical drama and three brand new contenders.

House (FOX)
The medical drama, now in its fifth season, returned on September 16 with a decent - if slightly unimpressive - 14.41 million viewers. The following week it shed more than 2 million, averaging 12.13 million, then rallied slightly to 12.66 million on September 30. The figures are down on the audience averages for the last three seasons (17.3 million, 19.4 million and 16.2 million respectively). But while total viewership is down, the show is still the third most-popular show on TV in the 18-49 demographic, behind Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives.

90210 (The CW)
The much-hyped spinoff from Beverly Hills, 90210 has been a strong addition to The CW's increasingly popular Fall lineup. The double-length premiere pulled in a mighty 4.91 million viewers on September 2 and for the subsequent five episodes, the show has been averaging between 3 and 3.3 million. The series is also up 66% on the network's 18-49 audience average.

Fringe (FOX)
JJ Abrams' latest TV project has made a solid, but relatively underwhelming, start for FOX. The two-hour premiere put in an average of 9.05 million viewers on September 9, down on both the 18.6 million who saw Lost start in 2004 and the 15 million who turned out for the start of Alias in 2001. The audience for Fringe surged in week two, when 13.36 million tuned in after the season premiere of House. For its subsequent two airings, the audience has slipped back to around 10 million. The network is impressed, though, and with a strong 18-49 performance has already picked up the show for a full 22-episode season.

The Mentalist (CBS)
This new crime drama, about a psychic who assists the police force, is the most-watched new series of the season to date. The Mentalist debuted on September 23 with 15.55 million viewers, and remarkably, kept hold of 98% of the audience in week two. CBS has ordered six more scripts and a full season order is now imminent.

The Mentalist is not a psychic. In one of the shows he tells some that he is not a psychic. He said that he worked as as a one in the past, but he was a fake.

For some reason, House S4 didn't gel quite so well in the US as it apparently did in the UK - a lot of people were winging about Chase and Cameron not being involved, unable to look past it like Brits seemed to do more easily. I reckon that's why S5 is a little down. I thought S4 was fantastic and can't wait for the new season to start over here. Oh, and as for Fringe - I quit halfway through Ep 2.

There is generally a decline in US series during season 3 unless something special happens. For example the killing of Caitlin Todd in NCIS and the introduction of Ziva ensured its continued success.

90210 has been very poor in my opinion; not a patch on fellow CW starlet Gossip Girl. It must be an American audience thing, because it's been cancelled for the moment in Australia. I'm hoping there's a round-up involving ratings for "Supernatural" because I've been hearing some very promising things about ratings for S4 (which is chuffing amazing by the way)....
