'Supernatural' writer talks season four

Did they really do that? In a last-minute twist to Supernatural's season finale - shown last night on ITV2 - Dean was finally sent to Hell, losing a year-long battle to save his soul. But what does this mean for season four? Is Dean confined to Hell for good? We put in a call to Sera Gamble, one of the show's top scribes, to find out more.

Those final few seconds of the season... what was that all about?
"We'd been saying we were going to do that all season long, so I feel like we had to go there. Anything less than that would have been a cop-out, because we'd been saying there was no way to break that contract. There was a big discussion of what that moment would look like, but there was never any doubt in our minds to stick him down there and have him suffer all summer long and into next year."

It's quite a big thing for Supernatural to actually show the audience Hell, having only talked about it in the past.
"In my mind, that isn't even necessarily Hell itself. It's the starting place. I like to think of Dean as sitting in the chair in the waiting room to Hell. It's not even what he's going to experience once he gets into the first chamber of Hell. That's just where they stick you before they hand you the sign-in sheet. There's much, much worse to come for him!"

Where are you at with production of season four?
"We are working on the first batch of episodes, which is episodes one through seven. Eric Kripke (creator) and Bob Singer (executive producer) are off casting some of our roles right now. I'm writing episode two, and we start shooting this week."

What's your episode about?
"It's very hard to talk about, but I will say there are very, very angry, malevolent ghosts in my episode. There are also familiar faces that I think fans will be happy to see again. When I was figuring out how the story was going to run, and which guest stars might be fun to bring back, I kept my fingers crossed. I knew it would be hard to get them because they are very talented and hard-working actors who are busy, so we're lucky."

Could Jeffrey Dean Morgan (John Winchester) ever rejoin the cast?
"We would love to have him back, but he's really busy. He's turned into a huge star over here! We got to use his voice for an episode at the end of last season, so there's always a chance. We would love to bring back the character if our schedules ever lined up, but I don't think anyone should hold their breath because he's in the midst of a huge movie right now."

In general, how does season four tally with the first three?
"I haven't been quite as excited about a mythology for a season as I am about this season. Either I'm on crack or this is the coolest mythology we've done in a long time! I'm really excited to see what the fan reaction is when these episodes air and we start to reveal what we have in mind."

How did the writers' strike affect your storytelling last season? You were six episodes short in the end.
"While we were waiting to hear when and if we would be shut down, we kept coming up with story ideas and thinking of ways to tell that story in different sizes. When we got back [from the strike], it was a question of 'what is the most important story to tell?' We had one story that was clearly the most important: that Dean has made a deal with the demon and has one year left to live. There are some others that we'll be paying off in season four - such as why Sam and Dean's mum's friends all got killed - and some others that kind of fell by the wayside."

How long do you think the show can run for?
"I've no inside knowledge of whether we'll be picked up for another season, but the thing about our show is that there's a built-in structure that works and will keep working for 150 episodes or more. As for the Winchester family and their issues with the demons, I have no idea what that story would be about in season seven or eight, but I have faith in the writing staff and Eric. I actually don't worry about it. Supernatural is one of those shows that could go on for a really long time."

The new season of Supernatural airs from September on The CW in the US and in January 2009 on ITV2 in the UK.

This show is just fantastic. I really don't think I could ever get bored. The storylines are gripping and keep you interested. The finale of Season 3 had me sitting on the end of my sofa with my hands over my mouth - words can just not describe... Why do we have to wait so long is my only question. Roll on Jan 09 .

i really enjoyed the series, even got my other half wanting to see the upcoming series now... a little mortified that "final year" was rushed at the end of series 3 but after the trickster making Sam witness Dean die over 102 times im sure he's just gonna chase Lillith down, and... well.... ... I hope he's got the Colt and Ruby's Knife in his arsenal...... ... but whats the real deal with Ruby, i mean we know she was once a witch, then a demon... but how does she know how to fix the Colt and where did her knife come from??? loved the FBI agent who after being posessed was on the Winchester's side and publically killed them off... i thought that was truly Human. hopefuly the next series will have some more Questions and Answers..... so i guess ill just have to wait. Keep Up The Good Work.

i love the series super natural but i have a little problem with it. and the problem is that it seems that we only see the dark side that is Demons, evil Ghost, dark spells, hounds of hell and and the only help they seem to get is from themselves and other demons. what about the side of light, i mean angels, arc angels and the bible after all they us crucifixes to bless the water use to fight the demon. i Just feel it would be cool to have some powerful angels like in this book "Piercing the Darkness" or "Preasnt Darkness" by Frank Perrette

Its interesting that Sera Gamble reckons Supernatural "could go on for a really long time". I really really really hope she's right but Ive read many an interview where Kripke says it'll probably end with season 5.

Great End to a great series guys. Also I want to be Dean.....although you can spare me the hell, but my missus really fancies him and I dont think she fancies me at all. Therefore if I could be him I would be very pleased indeed.....Please can you fix this for me.

I think it would be kind of cool to have Dean come back as a reluctant demon in the fourth season! Horrible wait for the new series to start though!!! JANUARY?????????????? Aaaargh!

Last season was the best yet. The episode Ghostfacers was one of the best tv episodes I have ever seen anywhere. "gay love can pierce through the veil of death to save the day" funniest quote ever

Just to start off with i thought that id say that... i am a true supernatural fan. Well who isn't? The show is jam-packed with every emotion and every adventure you could possibly want in a TV series. When ever i sit down to watch spn, i always experience the brothers love and how far each will go to save the other. Which makes fantastic watching along with terrifying mythical creatures and evil characters. The show would not be the hit show it is today if it wasn't for the fantastic cast who make up spn, especially the two main characters Jensen (Dean), and Jared (Sam). Both are very talented actors, and are an inspiration to many young actors or even people who want to take a career in acting in the future. Overall i think that it was a GREAT season finale which has kept all of us spn fans biting our nails and sitting on the edge of our seats, awaiting the next chapter of the two brothers (or maybe one brothers) life, which by every episode we see a series of unfortunate events spiral out, and trap the two brothers, in our eyes... heroes! Come on though... what an ending! ... Great... Absolutely great! We find out that Sam is more powerful than his rival Lilith... but she is still out there, as Sam was not quick enough to finish the demon off before she left her victims body. And of course... Deans in Hell! The suspense which leads us up to Season 4 is quite harsh for all us spn fans, but thats what keeps us wanting more and more. I don't think i will ever personally tire of watching spn, because Eric is brilliant and so so talented, always managing to find more ways to make us catch out breath and make our jaws drop wide, just when we think there can't possibly be more. With it been Deans Cheeky gags, and determination to save his little brother, Sammy's (sorry Sam's) puppy dog eyes, and connection to everything demonic, or blood thirsty demons and spirits waiting out in the dark for their chance to tear the Winchester brothers lives up into more tiny shreds. Yes.. we have stuck with the brothers through much, we have witnessed Sam's dark side, Dean's evil double, endless pranks, many laughs, the death and reawakening of Sam, Dean's life changing Deal with the devil, and the death of both of their parents. Yes its been a long journey, and i hope it will continue for many years to come, i for one will stick with the Winchesters till the very end.!

This show reminds me so much of Angel when that was in full flow, but this is so much darker and seems to be aimed at an older audience. I cant wait for series 4 and I hope supernatural runs for another 6 seasons at least. Roll on September. Cant wait.
