Is this the new 'Supernatural'?

Published Tuesday, May 26 2009, 09:34 BST | By Dan French | 7 comments
The final teaser we have for you from The CW's 2009-10 schedule is The Vampire Diaries, a new drama that has already divided public opinion.

The series is based on L.J. Smith's books of the same name and has protective fans of the novels in a bit of a flap.

For those of you who haven't read the books, the drama revolves around a young woman who is torn between two vampire brothers, played by Paul Wesley and Lost's Ian Somerhalder. The show will be paired up with the similarly-fraternal Supernatural in The CW's new schedule from September.

Even if it is based on books from 1991 it is still obviously influenced by Buffy and Twilight and from the looks of it, not in a good way!

I'm sick of hearing that everything is a Twilight rip off! hello don't people actually realise that there were vampires before those books came out!

The books this TV series is based upon were written in 1991, so were actually written before buffy the vampire slayer, angel, twilight, and supernatural..etc came out. Had this program come out in the early 90s, you wouldn't be hearing any of these 'lack of originality' comments. Out of all the stuff mentioned, the only one VD really bears any similarities to is twilight which came out years later, after the VD (the author of twilight must have read the VD books). VD however, is way superior.

Supernatural? No. It reads like a shameless Twilight rip off, only with "Twice-the-Edward" in case you don't particularly want to bone the first one. The fact they're brothers seems utterly incidental.
doesn't look too bad, on May 26th, 2009
The books aren't bad, though they're nothing like Supernatural except for the whole vampire thing. In fact the first book in my opinion is very similar in nature to Twilight, I can see it doing ok but not brilliantly, mainly because it isn't anything original but we have been seeing quite a few of these supernatural type shows around these past few years.

LAME LAME LAME. At least Supernatural will never do anything that cliche and stupid. The only similarities are the fact that boths shows involve two brothers and thats it. If Supernatural stars to lose in the rating because fo this then the CW better switch Smallville back to its usual time slot and put this in the 'friday night death slot'. It aint gonna get the time of day from me
