'Ugly Betty' star called a "bitch" by fans

Ugly Betty star Becki Newton has revealed that she is regularly called a "bitch" by fans of the hit show.

The 28-year-old often has to endure verbal abuse from followers of the series, in which she plays Mode's acid-tongued receptionist Amanda.

But she insisted that she is unconcerned by the slurs because it proves she is a good actress, saying: "All the abuse just means I'm doing my job properly."

Newton said she bases Amanda on real-life fashionistas she has encountered in New York, telling Now: "These very over-the-top characters really do exist. You don’t meet them at the grocery store, but if you walk through the halls of somewhere like the Condé Nast building, where these magazines are based, you may well see clones of Amanda and Marc. It’s frightening."
