Exclusive: Steven Moffat 'Doctor Who' Xmas Q&A: "It'll be quite a rollercoaster"

By and Tom Mansell
Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has spoken to Digital Spy about this year's Christmas Special.

Moffat told DS that the Doctor (Matt Smith) is in a dark place when festive episode 'The Snowmen' begins.

"It's rare that you get to do moments like this in Doctor Who where you get to talk about the impact of his lifestyle on him - it's usually about the companion," the sci-fi drama's head writer and executive producer explained.

"It's going to affect him now and then and he's a right old misery at the beginning because he's suffered a really quite traumatic loss.

"I think he's probably reached the point in his life where he's saying, 'Friendship for me is just postponed bereavement - I want to be on my own for a while'."

Moffat also dropped a few hints about what to expect from the eight new Doctor Who episodes that will follow in 2013.

"We'll have a fantastic alien planet, we'll be under the sea, we'll be in the sky - it'll be quite a rollercoaster!" he teased.

The Doctor Who Christmas special will air on December 25 at 5.15pm on BBC One.
