David Tennant has revealed that he quit Doctor Who because he feared starring in the show as an old man.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast this morning, the Scottish actor admitted: "[I thought] I better take a deep breath and do it or I literally will never leave.

"It's hard when you love something so much and when something is going so well to ever think about moving on. I'd rather go when there's a chance that people might miss me than overstay my welcome."

He added: "I would be there until I was 86 and people would think, 'Is he ever going?'"

Tennant will depart the cult show after the 2009 Christmas special along with producer Russell T Davies.
