The owner and operator of the fansite issued a statement, which confirmed that both would be shut down indefinitely from July 31, though the move would not affect the Gallifrey One conventions.
Lyon said: "Since 1996, Outpost Gallifrey has served as a valuable source of news and information in the online world. Since 2001, the Doctor Who Forum has created an enormous sense of community amongst Doctor Who fans.
"People will wonder out loud: Why don't we spin it off, or why don't I pass it along to others? Imply put, Outpost Gallifrey is nothing but a concept, a concept I created, but which now rests in the hands of the fans who utilise it every day."
He added: "It's a title, and you don't need a title to continue... you already have the community."
Users on the DS Doctor Who subforum offered a mixed response to the news.
Analysethis said: "And good riddance to them too! Perhaps now Doctor Who fans can finally get rid of the bitchy over-dramatic snobbish stereotypes and 'questionable' staffing that plagued OG and DWF for so long."
