The one-off episode, to be broadcast on BBC One on Christmas Day, is a retelling of the classic Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol.
Smith told PA: "The episode features a wonderful shark, which I was very excited about.
"I always wanted to explore the aquatic - viewers can expect Jaws with a twist."
The episode will see Michael Gambon play the Ebeneezer Scrooge-like character Kazran Sardick, while the Doctor tries to save the old man's soul.
"It's a fun old yarn and the Doctor simply loves Christmas," Smith added.
