Details as to why The Doctor will have facial hair are yet to be unveiled, but Smith admitted to PA that he would not have been able to grow his own beard for the episode.
"It was a glued-on beard," he said. "I wouldn't be able to grow a full-on beard like that in time."
Smith added that it was particularly difficult to peel away the faux hair at the end of each day's shooting schedule.
"They had to remove it with a substance smelling like white turps," he said.
The Time Lord previously adorned facial hair during the fourth Doctor serial The Leisure Hive in 1980.
It was reported earlier today that former EastEnders actor Lee Ross and Ultimate Force star Danny Sapani have signed for roles in the sci-fi drama's upcoming sixth series.
Doctor Who is expected to return to BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US this spring.
