The actor told AOL TV that The Doctor has a dark side but is "fundamentally... a good guy".
Smith said: "While he's destructive, he's [also] bloody good fun. [He] shows [his companions] a part of the universe that they can't touch, they can't even fathom. And he can put you in touch with that."
He added: "I think it's a very interesting situation for The Doctor, because this Doctor, particularly, lies quite a lot, which I think is really interesting. [But] there's a greater good that he's fighting for."
Smith also confirmed that he will reassess his future with Doctor Who after filming on the seventh series is complete.
"I'm gonna shoot the next season and then see where I end up after that," he said. "Of course you do [think about the future], but by the same token I think there's a skill in focusing on the task in hand, which is what I try to do."
He continued: "I want to have a film career eventually. And I'd love to get back into theatre. But I love making this show. I love watching it, I love talking about it and being part of it. I love working with Steven [Moffat]. I feel very privileged to be a part of it."
Doctor Who returns to BBC One this Saturday at 7.10pm and airs the same day at 9/8c on BBC America.
