Steven Moffat's final episode for Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill's companions scored an average overnight audience of 5.9m (26.9%) between 7.15pm and 8pm, with extra viewers watching the story's climax in the last five minutes.
'The Angels Take Manhattan', currently BBC iPlayer's 'Most Popular' request, rose 400k on last week's 'The Power of Three' rating but stands as series seven's third most popular episode behind 'A Town Called Mercy' and the premiere, 'Asylum of the Daleks'.
Doctor Who will air a Christmas special later this year, before the remaining eight episodes of the series are screened sometime in 2013.
Elsewhere yesterday, 8.32m (35.9%) watched The X Factor's Judges' Houses stage from 8pm, while 420k (2%) caught up on ITV1 +1.
The Xtra Factor, which has previously held up well this year, slumped to 608k (3.1%) in a later 9.50pm slot on ITV2.
Back on ITV1, Red or Black? mustered 3.23m (15.2%) from 7.15pm (+1: 111k/0.5%) and 2.84m (14.3%) from 9.50pm (+1: 147k/1%). The Jonathan Ross Show followed with 2.25m (14.5%) and 155k (1.8%) on timeshift. Fool Britannia amused 2.16m (12.5%) earlier at 6.45pm (+1: 104k/0.5%).
BBC One's lineup featured Total Wipeout (3.2m/18.8%), Secret Fortune (3.58m/15.7%), Casualty (3.72m/15.8%) and Match of the Day (3.83m/23.8%).
Classic Dad's Army topped BBC Two's night with 2.04m (9.3%) at 7.30pm, while The Thick of It tickled 913k (4.4%) at 9.45pm.
Meanwhile, CSI: Miami anchored Channel 5's evening with 1.15m (5.8%). Channel 4's highest audience of the night came at 9pm for The Million Pound Drop Live, which had just 845k (4%).
Overall, ITV1 led the primetime race with 25.2% (+1: 1.2%), ahead of BBC One's 20%, BBC Two's 5.9%, Channel 5's 4.4% (+1: 0.2%), and Channel 4's 3.1% (+1: 0.3%).
